Among the 300 highly trained scientists and engineers selected, Rebecca Miller of the University of Southern California\u2019s Huntington-USC Institute on California and the West (ICW) will spend a year serving at the Department of State\u2019s Bureau of Overseas Building Operations.<\/p>\n<p>Miller was a postdoctoral scholar with the West on Fire Project at the Huntington-USC Institute on California and the West for the 2021-2022 academic year. While at USC, her research focused on how wildfires have impacted state policies and local community resilience in California. Miller will be bringing her background in wildfire mitigation and preparedness to support the Climate Security and Resilience Program, which seeks to support the Department of State\u2019s diplomatic missions through reduction of natural hazard risk across their global building portfolio.<\/p>\n<p>ICW Director and USC Professor William Deverell notes that Miller\u2019s \u201cresearch focuses on how recent wildfires have shaped policies and community resilience in California, and she already published an impressive range of scholarly pieces.
