{"id":4,"date":"2022-11-02T18:09:55","date_gmt":"2022-11-02T18:09:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/hyperbaric\/?page_id=4"},"modified":"2026-03-05T20:07:28","modified_gmt":"2026-03-05T20:07:28","slug":"home","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/hyperbaric\/","title":{"rendered":"USC Catalina Hyperbaric Chamber"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n  \n    \n\n\n\n\n\n\n<div\n  class=\"cc--component-container cc--rich-text \"\n\n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  >\n  <div class=\"c--component c--rich-text\"\n    \n      >\n\n    \n      \n<div class=\"f--field f--wysiwyg\">\n\n    \n  <h1>50+ Years of Unbending Service to the Southern California Diving Communities<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n  <\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n  \n    \n\n\n\n\n\n\n<div\n  class=\"cc--component-container cc--featured-block \"\n\n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  >\n  <div class=\"c--component c--featured-block\"\n    \n      >\n\n    \n  <div class=\"text-image-container\">\n    <div class=\"text-container\">\n\n      \n      \n                  \n<div class=\"f--field f--description\">\n\n    \n  <p><big><strong>Without proper treatment, major problems from diving accidents, most commonly Decompression Sickness (the &#8220;Bends&#8221;) and Air Embolism, can lead to permanent disabling injuries and in some instances be fatal.<\/strong>\u00a0 In the Southern California area around Catalina Island, the combination of effective on-site management of a diving accident along with the rapid response by <a href=\"http:\/\/fire.lacounty.gov\/Lifeguards\/FieldOpsCatalinaParamedics.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Los Angeles County Baywatch Lifeguards<\/a>, or the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uscg.mil\/d11\/airstala\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">U.S. Coast Guard<\/a>, and swift, effective treatment at the Chamber can save a diver&#8217;s life.<\/big><\/p>\n<p><big><strong>The USC Catalina Hyperbaric Chamber is unique.<\/strong> It is one of the few Hyperbaric Chambers in the country set up to treat diving emergencies 24\/7\/365.\u00a0 It relies on a dedicated group of <a href=\"\/hyperbaric\/becoming-a-chamber-volunteer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Volunteer Chamber Crew Members<\/a> to staff the Chamber throughout the year. Its <a href=\"\/hyperbaric\/how-funded\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">funding<\/a> comes from a LA County Contract and, primarily, from donations from the diving communities.<br \/>\n<\/big><\/p>\n<p><big><strong>The USC Catalina Hyperbaric Chamber places a great emphasis on <a href=\"\/hyperbaric\/education\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">education<\/a>.<\/strong> Programs taught by the Chamber at the <a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife-wrigley.usc.edu\/research\/wmsc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">USC Wrigley Marine Science Center<\/a>, and on the mainland, include <a href=\"\/hyperbaric\/edam\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Emergency Dive Accident Management (EDAM)<\/a> and <a href=\"\/hyperbaric\/chops\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hyperbaric Chamber Operations<\/a>. Professional, recreational, and research divers come from as far away as Antarctica to attend these courses. <a href=\"\/hyperbaric\/chamber-tours\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chamber Tours<\/a> and experiential <a href=\"\/hyperbaric\/chamber-dives\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chamber &#8220;Dives&#8221;<\/a> are available for groups and service
