History at USC offers a rigorous course of study that balances depth in particular fields with a broad, transnational, and interdisciplinary perspective. We train our students in historical methods, research, critical analysis of written and visual sources, historical writing, and historical pedagogy through intensive reading courses, seminars, and tutorials. This training culminates in the PhD dissertation, a significant scholarly and historiographical contribution to the study of a field.<\/p>\n<p>The program\u2019s relatively small size facilitates close working relationships between students and faculty and encourages collaboration between students working in diverse areas. It also allows for flexibility, permitting students to form their own specializations across or between traditional field boundaries. Our students also take advantage of the unique opportunities around Los Angeles provided by such leading cultural institutions as the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.huntington.org\/\">Huntington Library<\/a>, the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.getty.edu\/research\/index.html\">Getty Center<\/a>, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lacma.org\/\">Los Angeles County Museum of Art<\/a>, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wendemuseum.org\/\">Wende Museum<\/a>, and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pacificasiamuseum.usc.edu\/\">Pacific Asia Museum<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Students benefit from the extraordinary resources around USC, including, for example, the\u00a0<a title=\"Cinema Library\" href=\"https:\/\/libraries.usc.edu\/locations\/cinematic-arts-library\" target=\"_self\">Cinema Arts Library<\/a>, the\u00a0<a title=\"Warner Bros Archives\" href=\"https:\/\/cinema.usc.edu\/about\/warnerbrosarchives.cfm\" target=\"_self\">Warner Bros. Archives<\/a>, the\u00a0<a title=\"USC Special Collections\" href=\"http:\/\/libguides.usc.edu\/c.php?g=234940&amp;p=1559280\" target=\"_self\">USC Libraries Special Collections<\/a>, the\u00a0<a title=\"ONE National Gay and Lesbian Archives\" href=\"http:\/\/one.usc.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ONE National Gay and Lesbian Archives<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0<a title=\"Feuchtwanger Memorial Library\" href=\"http:\/\/libguides.usc.edu\/feuchtwanger\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Feuchtwanger Memorial Library<\/a>\u00a0at the USC Libraries, and the\u00a0<a title=\"Shoah Foundation Visual History Archive\" href=\"https:\/\/sfi.usc.edu\/vha\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Shoah Foundation Visual History Archive<\/a>, which houses the video testimonies of 52,000 Holocaust survivors.
