Our <a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/hist\/undergraduate-studies\/department-majors\/\">majors<\/a> chart their own scholarly journey by choosing from a vast array of <a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/hist\/undergraduate-studies\/undergraduate-courses-and-advising\/\">courses<\/a> that cover multiple geographic areas and temporal periods. They read and discuss the most up to date research. They dig deeply into the raw materials of the past. They visit the places they study during <a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/hist\/undergraduate-studies\/historical-happenings\/\">travel courses<\/a>. They do their own research in archives both within and outside the country<a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/hist\/undergraduate-studies\/undergraduate-fellowships-awards-and-prizes\/\"> funded by the department<\/a>. Then they take that research and produce their own pieces of scholarship often by writing an <a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/hist\/undergraduate-studies\/honors-program\/\">honors thesis<\/a>. They publish <a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/hist\/undergraduate-studies\/presentation-and-publication-opportunities\/\">their own work<\/a> and produce a <a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/hist\/undergraduate-studies\/the-scroll\/\">research journal<\/a> of their own. Our students learn by doing. Some History majors go on to graduate studies and careers in schools, universities, and archives. Others find that they are highly prepared for law school, journalism, politics, social services, or any number of other jobs that require analytical skills.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"height: 72px;\">\n<td style=\"height: 72px;\"><strong>Our faculty\u00a0<\/strong>are nationally and internationally known experts in their fields! They combine top-rate research in their specialties with a dedication to teaching. Classes are usually small so that students can work personally with professors.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"height: 96px;\">\n<td style=\"height: 96px;\"><strong>USC and Los Angeles<\/strong> have some of the best resources for historical study\u00a0<em>in the country<\/em>.\u00a0Besides having its own collections of primary sources, our library provides access to databases full of historical documents. Nearby are also the\u00a0world-famous\u00a0Huntington Library, the Getty Museum and Library, and all the other museums and archives of the LA region.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"height: 144px;\">\n<td style=\"height: 144px;\"><strong>History opens your future<\/strong> career path to a multitude of options from educator, to advocate, to entrepreneur. In recent years our majors have excelled at leading law and medical schools, joined prestigious PhD programs, been accepted for Teach for America, and found employment in television journalism, non-profits, real estate, and at Google, Disney, and the FBI. The American Historical Association has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.historians.org\/resource\/careers-for-history-majors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #9d0000;\">tips<\/span><\/a> on how to make your major work for you and testimonials from majors on why being a history major helped them excel in their current jobs.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"height: 144px;\">\n<td style=\"height: 144px;\"><strong>History prepares you:<\/strong> A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amacad.org\/multimedia\/pdfs\/publications\/researchpapersmonographs\/HI_Workforce-2018.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><span style=\"color: #9d0000;\">2018<\/span><\/span> <span style=\"color: #9d0000;\">study<\/span><\/a> by the American Academy of Arts and Sciences reported that history majors made close to the highest earnings among humanities majors and that 87% were happy with their job. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ox.ac.uk\/news\/2023-06-21-new-research-shows-how-studying-humanities-can-benefit-young-people-s-future-careers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #9d0000;\">2023 study in the U.K.<\/span><\/a> showed that humanities majors had many different pathways for employment which made it easier for them to pivot in challenging labor markets. They also found that employers valued their creativity and ability to communicate effectively.
