I received my Ph.D. in Marine Estuarine and Environmental Science (MEES) from the University of Maryland. After a postdoc, I served as AAAS Science Policy Fellow at the U.S. State Department in the Office of Oceans Affairs then joined the J. Craig Venter Institute to coordinate a global ocean research expedition using molecular approaches to evaluate marine microbial biodiversity. I joined faculty of the University of Southern California in 2006 with appointments in Biology and Environmental Studies. My work combines biology, molecular techniques, and environmental science to better understand factors that structure marine ecology. From 2019-2023 I was on detail at the National Science Foundation in the Office of Polar Programs. I received my Ph.D. in Marine Estuarine and Environmental Science (MEES) from the University of Maryland. After a postdoc, I served as AAAS Science Policy Fellow at the U.S. State Department in the Office of Oceans Affairs then joined the J. Craig Venter Institute to coordinate a global ocean research expedition using molecular approaches to evaluate marine microbial biodiversity. I joined faculty of the University of Southern California in 2006 with appointments in Biology and Environmental Studies. My work combines biology, molecular techniques, and environmental science to better understand factors that structure marine ecology. From 2019-2023 I was on detail at the National Science Foundation in the Office of Polar Programs.
