SYNOPSIS<\/strong><\/p>\n

Christian Schlegel\u2019s ryman<\/em> consists of three \u201ctalk poems,\u201d in the tradition of the artist David Antin. The first talk was conducted at the author\u2019s desk in the Hudson Valley, the second over Zoom, and the third, in two parts, while he paced a cemetery in Ithaca and a businessperson\u2019s hotel room in Albany. Topics include the painter Robert Ryman and his contemporaries, Romantic poetry, avant-garde film, obsessive-compulsive rumination, and friendship.<\/p>\n

These pieces were composed ex tempore, recorded, and mostly faithfully transcribed, for an effect very close to speech, or thought in action. Something like poetry.<\/p>\n

“i like artists who are confused by what they do or for whom the doing comes first always,\u201d writes Christian Schlegel, who in this riveting book takes up and extends the idiosyncratic and revelatory art practice that was\u2014for forty years\u2014David Antin\u2019s talk poems. Like Antin\u2019s, Schlegel\u2019s \u201cthinking in public\u201d is something you feel, as if in the room, happening. \u201cto remain on the surface of the thought,\u201d to accompany artists like Robert Ryman and Donald Judd and filmmakers like Charles Burnett and Nicole Holofcener through ideas and forms, and to find a poetry \u201cwith my life as the medium and the action\u201d are objectives that choreograph this free intellection, captivating and bracingly precarious in its development. Friendship and facture, shame and embodiment are sorted and moved around as concepts, as \u201ca continual preparation\u201d for a performance that, it turns out, this book is delivering.<\/p>\n

What happens when pages talk? What are these forms of attention and involvement that they instigate \u2013 forms which feel so qualitatively different from reading even as I know that reading is exactly (is \u201call\u201d) I\u2019m doing? Christian Schlegel\u2019s ryman<\/em> is a transformative sequence of poems
\nwhich gently, deliberately, with detailed concentration, as well as great risk and vulnerability, hold open a space-time for something like participatory rumination. To \u201cread\u201d them is to play a part in their new social system. I was addressed, committed, and everything mattered.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo talk is very pleasant when it looks like writing,\u201d writes Gertrude Stein in Listen to Me <\/i>(1936). Here, where to read is to hear and to talk is to compose, the reverse is the case. Schlegel\u2019s wager is to run on by elaborating, digressing, extrapolating, and ruminating, to circle back to produce what David Antin refers to as \u201cradical coherency.\u201d Radical because it develops \u201csometimes rather startlingly\u201d and is held together by something so elusive, it\u2019s nothing if not pleasant. I, for one, am all ears.<\/p>\n

Christian Schlegel<\/strong> <\/a>is the author of the poetry collection Honest James (The Song Cave, 2015). He holds an MFA from the Iowa Writers\u2019 Workshop and a doctorate in English from Harvard, teaches English and creative writing at Pierrepont School in Connecticut, and lives in New Haven.<\/p>\n
