Our Dornsife Faculty-Led Programs office does not offer scholarships. However, we encourage students to contact the scholarship office and explore the available scholarship options within USC and outside USC.

  • SOAR

The SOAR program provides funding to Dornsife undergraduates for participation as a research assistant in a faculty member’s project during the fall and spring semesters of the academic year. The purpose of SOAR is to connect students with faculty members and their research.  It allows all students to be mentored one-on-one by USC faculty, introduces students early in their academic careers to the process of serious scholarly inquiry, and fosters valuable relationships between students and faculty. Please note that we do not fund independent research projects, including those related to 490 courses or honors theses.  Students interested in pursuing independent research should apply for PURF, the Provost’s Undergraduate Research Fund.

    SURF/SHURE

SURF and SHURE are opportunities for USC Dornsife students to pursue research in conjunction with Dornsife faculty members, either on or off-campus, during the summer semester. The purpose of SURF/SHURE is to connect students with faculty members and their research.  It allows students to be mentored one-on-one by USC Dornsife faculty, introduces students early in their academic careers to the process of serious scholarly inquiry, and fosters valuable relationships between students and faculty.

Students in good standing with a USC Dornsife major may apply for research funding up to $3,000 to supplement expenses while working on a Dornsife faculty member’s research. Students participating in one of USC Dornsife’s Problems Without Passports (PWP) research courses may use these funds to offset tuition.

  • USC Academic Achievement Award

This is an excellent award for FLP students who are applying to semester, spring break, Maymester, or Julymester programs, and their units will be above the tuition block unit rate of 18.  This award provides a tuition benefit to undergraduate students who are pursuing either two or more majors or a minor in addition to their major. That means they can register for up to 21 units at the cost of 18 units (3 free units!) However, students have to at least be at sophomore standing and have earned a cumulative USC GPA of 3.75.

Tuition Assistance Benefit (TAB) & Study Abroad

Tuition-based scholarships (e.g., Trustee, Presidential, and Dean’s) are adjusted proportionally according to the total tuition (the USC administrative fee is excluded) of the program to which the student is accepted.  All scholarships must be reported to USC Financial Aid, and all scholarships are factored into calculations of student need.

For students who receive a tuition assistance benefit because of a family member’s employment at USC,  the study abroad program tuition amount is covered by TAB. All programs have minimum unit requirements while abroad, which range from 15 to 24 units per semester.  The number of units attempted abroad is the number of TAB units “used up” or deducted from the total number of TAB undergraduate units available.
