economy, enriching communities, and contributing to the nation&#8217;s workforce. Immigrants pay billions in taxes, support vital programs like Social Security, and help drive innovation, care work, and small business development. Policies that target immigrants for removal often result in widespread harm\u2014separating families, disrupting local economies, and undermining community stability. At the same time, a clear majority of Americans support inclusive immigration policies, including pathways to citizenship, recognizing that our shared future is more secure when rooted in dignity, opportunity, and fairness. Read on for seven key facts about immigration that every American should know.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>1. Undocumented immigrant arrivals to the U.S. have fallen sharply since 2023, undermining claims about the rate of undocumented immigration and Trump\u2019s declaration of a national emergency at the U.S. -Mexico Border.<\/b><b><\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\nTrump\u2019s claims about high undocumented migration is contradicted by the facts: border crossings have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/short-reads\/2024\/10\/01\/migrant-encounters-at-u-s-mexico-border-have-fallen-sharply-in-2024\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">plummeted since late 2023<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/02\/13\/us\/trump-border-immigration.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">decline started during the end of Biden\u2019s term<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and well before Trump was elected (see graph below) and after the launch of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbp.gov\/about\/mobile-apps-directory\/cbphome\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CBP One app in 2023<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an online portal where migrants can schedule appointments at ports of entry to apply for asylum. A growing share of \u201cundocumented\u201d immigrants came through legal channels and are waiting for a determination on their visa applications.<\/b><b><\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\nA growing number of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/short-reads\/2024\/07\/22\/what-we-know-about-unauthorized-immigrants-living-in-the-us\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">undocumented immigrants have authorization to work and reside in the U.S.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and, under current law, are protected from deportation removal. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Immigrants who arrived through humanitarian pathways\u2013like <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Temporary Protected Status (TPS) or asylum\u2013<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/short-reads\/2024\/07\/22\/what-we-know-about-unauthorized-immigrants-living-in-the-us\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">make up 30 percent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the undocumented population as of 2022. These immigrants seeking humanitarian relief are counted in most undocumented estimates <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">because they could be subject to deportation if humanitarian channels of entry are ended<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>3. Sixty-six percent of undocumented immigrants have lived in the U.S. for over a decade, making them deeply rooted in American communities which means that mass deportations will have severe, destabilizing effects on families, labor markets, and local economies.<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\nAccording to USC ERI\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/immigrantdataca.org\/indicators\/recency-of-arrival?breakdown=by-status\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">California Immigrant Data Portal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 69% of undocumented Californians have been living in the country for at least a decade. This means that<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> many undocumented people are strongly linked to American citizens and families, with deep long-settled roots connecting them to schools, jobs, and our communities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nationwide,<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/short-reads\/2024\/07\/22\/what-we-know-about-unauthorized-immigrants-living-in-the-us\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">22 million people<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> live in households with an undocumented immigrant<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As of 2022,\u00a0 approximately 4.4 million U.S.-born children live in a mixed-status household with an undocumented parent. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of the 22 million people in households with an unauthorized immigrant, 11 million are U.S. born or lawful immigrants.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In California, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/immigrantdataca.org\/indicators\/immigration-status\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2.5 million immigrants<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were undocumented. In 2021, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/immigrantdataca.org\/indicators\/mixed-status-families\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">20% of all individuals under 18 in California were living in mixed-status families<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, meaning they were undocumented themselves or living with someone who was.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overall, mass detention and deportations will have devastating negative impacts on families and communities. Decades of studies highlight the negative social and economic consequences of family separations\u2013like the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bakerinstitute.org\/research\/social-and-economic-effects-expanded-deportation-measures\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">decline of dual-income households<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an increase in the children entering<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/latino\/us-citizen-child-recovering-brain-cancer-deported-mexico-undocumented-rcna196049\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the U.S. foster-care system<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and increased fear and isolation among <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC11592776\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mixed-status families<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> leading to anxiety, mental health effects, and long-term health consequences for immigrants and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC7944641\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">U.S.-citizens<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b><\/b><b>4. Mass deportations will have devastating economic consequences for our economy at the local, state, and national level, including for Medicare and Social Security.\u00a0<\/b><b><\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\nAccording to recent estimates by the American Immigration Council, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.americanimmigrationcouncil.org\/research\/mass-deportation\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mass deportation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will cost an average of $88 billion dollars annually, totalling over $350 billion over four years.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Currently, for every 1 million undocumented immigrants who reside in the country, public services receive $8.9 billion in additional tax <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/itep.org\/undocumented-immigrants-taxes-2024\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">revenue.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> On the flip side, for every 1 million undocumented immigrants who are deported, public services stand to lose $8.9 billion in tax revenue.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In California in 2022, Undocumented people<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/itep.org\/undocumented-immigrants-taxes-2024\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> paid nearly $8.5 billion in state and local taxes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, according to estimates from the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy (See graph below). A study by the American Immigration Council found that immigrants paid <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/map.americanimmigrationcouncil.org\/locations\/national\/#\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a grand total of 579.1 billion taxes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the fiscal year 2022.
