href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/eri\/about\/mission\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">committed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to supporting powerful, intersectional, and intersectoral movements for racial, economic, and environmental justice, the Equity Research Institute sees student voice and campus protest as a key part of making social progress.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In that light, we:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">strongly disapprove of the USC administration\u2019s decision to cancel the speech of a properly chosen valedictorian, Asna Tabassum, and continue to call on the administration to allow the valedictorian to speak her truths;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">strongly disagree with the USC administration\u2019s decision to call the Los Angeles Police Department to arrest students and faculty who were peacefully protesting and call on USC leadership to demilitarize campus, to support free speech and protest, and to work with local authorities to drop any charges against those who were arrested; and<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">strongly urge the USC administration to fully consider student demands for disclosure of USC investments and conduct an analysis of the possibilities for divestment.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While this statement is focused on issues of voice and protest on our campus, we acknowledge that the protests sweeping U.S. universities\u2013including by students, staff, and faculty <a href=\"https:\/\/labor.ucla.edu\/may-2-statement\/\">colleagues<\/a> at our crosstown institution of higher learning, UCLA\u2013have been prompted by the war in Gaza and the continuing loss of life there.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In November 2023, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ERI_USC\/status\/1720128462546178179\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">we echoed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> an extraordinary <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/belonging.berkeley.edu\/we-belong-each-other-call-end-violence\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">well-crafted call <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by other colleagues at the Othering and Belonging Institute at UC Berkeley, acknowledging the pain of multiple communities, stressing the longstanding asymmetry of power in the region, and calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.
