After all, the demographic change in California presaged the nation\u2019s change while the economic shifts in the Golden State also signal, for better or worse, America\u2019s economic future. Getting policies that secure a more prosperous and inclusive California is critical for the state, but it is also instructive for the nation.<\/p>\n<p>The report,\u00a0<em>Vote, Organize, Transform, Engage (VOTE): New Frontiers in Integrated Voter Engagement<\/em>, highlights lessons from a decade of building that civic capacity in California. There are four themes from the Golden State IVE story that we think are relevant for Californians and non-Californians alike\u2014and that we hope are easy to remember given its appropriate acronym: vote, organize, transform, and engage (VOTE). Taken together, these themes capture\u00a0<i>why\u00a0<\/i>groups employ IVE as a power-building strategy,\u00a0<i>what<\/i>\u00a0they are able to accomplish by harnessing IVE as part of their broader movement building, and the nuts and bolts of\u00a0<i>how\u00a0<\/i>they implement IVE.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Vote<\/strong>\u2014A focus on\u00a0<strong>tipping points, turnout, and technology<\/strong>\u00a0in order to have\u00a0<strong>decisive influence<\/strong>\u00a0on closely-contested electoral outcomes and to leverage that influence for\u00a0<strong>bolder proposals<\/strong>\u00a0that reach beyond what is winnable and towards the kind of\u00a0<strong>change that is needed<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Organize<\/strong>\u2014A stress on rooting the work in an ecosystem of\u00a0<strong>local grassroots organizing<\/strong>\u00a0groups committed to\u00a0<strong>developing leaders<\/strong>\u00a0to engage voters,\u00a0<strong>recruiting\u00a0<\/strong>voters to become\u00a0<strong>members<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>bridging local-state work.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Transform<\/strong>\u2014A vision for governance by transforming\u00a0<strong>who votes<\/strong>, the\u00a0<strong>issues they vote on<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>redefining notions of citizenship<\/strong>\u00a0and civic participation among those who are or have been excluded from voting.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Engage<\/strong>\u2014A commitment to engaging voters\u00a0<strong>year-round and between election cycles<\/strong>, engaging the\u00a0<strong>most impacted<\/strong>\u00a0communities and constituencies, and not only addressing\u00a0<strong>issues that they care about<\/strong>\u00a0but also\u00a0<strong>challenging beliefs and
