Racial Justice<\/span>\n\n\n<\/div>\n        \n                  \n<div class=\"f--field f--section-title\">\n\n    \n  <h2>\n          Breaking the Barriers: The Promise of Citizenship for Los Angeles County\n      <\/h2>\n\n\n<\/div>\n        \n                  \n<div class=\"f--field f--description\">\n\n    \n  <div class=\"html-content\">\n<div class=\"html-content\">\n<div class=\"html-content\">\n<p>May 2016<\/p>\n<p><em>By Manuel Pastor, Justin Scoggins, Jared Sanchez, and Rhonda Ortiz<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Naturalization brings economic and civic benefits\u2014and Los Angeles County is in a unique position to realize those gains with nearly one-tenth of the nation\u2019s eligible-to-naturalize adults.<\/p>\n<p>CSII&#8217;s report,\u00a0<em>Breaking the Barriers: The Promise of Citizenship for Los Angeles County,<\/em>\u00a0discusses the\u00a0<em>who<\/em>, the\u00a0<em>why<\/em>, and the\u00a0<em>what\u00a0<\/em>of naturalization: We offer a profile of the eligible to naturalize, suggest reasons why they should be supported in naturalizing, and detail which obstacles to naturalization\u2014individual and structural\u2014matter.<\/p>\n<p>We also discuss the\u00a0<em>where<\/em>: We provide tract-level maps of where the eligible to naturalize reside in the county, seeking to help groups focus on those areas with the greatest need for naturalization and to improve outreach to particular sub-groups.<\/p>\n<p>We conclude by focusing on the\u00a0<em>when<\/em>\u2014and that is now. While the country is roiled by immigration politics, California and Los Angeles County have a unique opportunity to demonstrate what goes right when we welcome\u2014rather than reject\u2014immigrants.<\/p>\n<p><em>Breaking the Barriers<\/em>\u00a0aims to inform the organizing and outreach efforts of those in the public and private sectors seeking to promote naturalization. After all, immigrant integration is in everyone\u2019s interest. Developing local partnerships to encourage naturalization is a positive step toward achieving broader economic prosperity and stronger civic infrastructure.
