She is also Associate Director of <a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/ERI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"0\">USC Equity Research Institute<\/a>\u00a0and Chair of the International Migration Section of the American Sociological Association. She also co-edits the USC Equity Research Institute\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/eri\/blog\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"1\">Blog<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Her research areas include immigration, immigrant integration, race\/ethnicity, and inequality, poverty, and mobility. Her book,<em>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sup.org\/books\/title\/?id=21566\">Barrios to Burbs: The Making of the Mexican American Middle Class<\/a><\/em>\u00a0(Stanford University Press, 2012) examines the mechanisms\u2014such as parental legal status, access to higher education, and business ownership\u2014that expedite social mobility and integration into the middle class for Mexican Americans. The book also examines middle-class Mexican Americans\u2019 racial\/ethnic and class identities, their connections to family and community, financial and social obligations to kin, and civic engagement.<\/p>\n<p>Agius Vallejo\u2019s next book, in progress, investigates middle-class Latino entrepreneurs and the Latino economic elite. The research examines the institutions that support the Latino economic elite\u00a0and argues that the Latino elite have developed an alternative, ethnic-based economic system of ethnoracial capitalism to facilitate a pathway of marked economic integration and mobility.<\/p>\n<p>With Lisa Keister, she has also published on wealth attainment. In 2020 they co-edited a special issue of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1080\/1369183X.2019.1592872\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"3\">Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies<\/a>\u00a0on Immigrants and Wealth Attainment.<\/p>\n<p>Agius Vallejo\u2019s research has been funded by The National Science Foundation, The American Association of University Women, The Lusk Center for Real Estate, the American Sociological Association and National Science Foundation Fund for the Advancement of the Discipline, the John Randolph and Dora Haynes Foundation, the UC Davis Center for Poverty Research, and the USC Office of the Provost. She has held an American fellowship from the American Association of University Women and also a postdoctoral fellowship at the Center for Comparative Immigration Studies and U.S.-Mexican Studies at the University of California, San Diego.<\/p>\n<p>In 2023, she received the Award\u00a0for\u00a0Public Sociology\u00a0in\u00a0International Migration from the ASA Section on International\u00a0Migration. Also in 2023, she, along with Stephanie Canizales, received the\u00a02023 Oliver Cromwell Cox Article Award from the ASA Section on\u00a0Racial and Ethnic Minorities for their paper, \u201cEthnoracial Capitalism and the Limits of Ethnic Solidarity,\u201d published in\u00a0<em>Social Problems<\/em>.\u00a0She has received two USC Provost Mentoring Awards for mentoring graduate (2022) and undergraduate students (2010), as well as the USC Raubenheimer Outstanding Junior Faculty Award for Research, Teaching, and Service (2012).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n  <\/div><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"","protected":false},"author":150,"featured_media":0,"parent":5944,"menu_order":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","template":"","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"class_list":["post-10180","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.1.1 -
