My name is Kyla, and I have been interning with SkySource, working with Mr. David Hertz throughout this semester. David Hertz is an architect and an innovator who has been working on sustainable architecture practice and fire resilience projects. Additionally, Hertz is trained as a wildfire firefighter; he is captain of the local county line community brigade and has worked with the Ventura County fire prevention district on several grants. During my time interning for SkySource, and following the major fires in Los Angeles in January 2025, I have been working towards getting Deer Creek community recognized as a Firewise community. Throughout this process I have researched fire safety and home hardening practices, as I have been responsible for creating detailed plans for Deer Creek to create more fire-resistant homes and build community practices which promote fire safety and education. Additionally, I have been able to meet with Firewise representatives over the past few months to better understand the most effective ways to create a fire safe community.
