Publishing an article in a peer-reviewed academic journal can feel like a daunting undertaking. For many graduate students and early career scholars, especially, the peer review and editorial process remain shrouded in mystery. This panel is designed to pull back the curtain on journal publishing through a conversation with three present and former journal editors. Panelists will walk you through the editorial process of each journal, from desk rejection to peer review, revise and resubmit, acceptance, and publication. They will discuss what they are looking for in submissions and revisions. And they will answer all of your questions about how to choose a publication venue, how and when to pitch your essay to editors, how to respond to challenging or conflicting readers’ reports, and how to navigate delays or extended timelines. Participants will have the opportunity to workshop article ideas in breakout groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/div>\n \n <\/div>\n\n\n \n \n \n

“Antiquity without Humans: The Primordial Landscapes of Cornelis van Dalem”<\/p>\n

The artist Cornelis van Dalem (1530-1575) offered the world a small corpus of painted meditations on geology. His so-called Dawn of Civilization (1565) now in Rotterdam, for example, depicts a grotto scene with early humans and animals, all amidst rocky cliffs and trees indebted to D\u00fcrer. Looking loosely to Lucretius, Dalem presents the scene as geologic in character (van Mander referred to the painter as a \u201cfraye schilder van rotsen\u201d.) But the painting interrogates the idea of natural history and \u201cenvironment\u201d at a moment of iconoclasm and colonialism. It interrogates the very relationship between humans, animals, and matter and the \u201cseparation\u201d that takes place in social as well as artistic terms when civilization arises from \u2013 or collapses into – the elements.<\/p>\n
