Screening and Enrollment<\/span>\n            \n                      <\/button>\n\n          <div id=\"section-1-1-3F8lf8osBU\" role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"heading-1-1-3F8lf8osBU\" class=\"accordion-panel\">\n\n                            \n    \n\n\n\n\n\n\n<div\n  class=\"cc--component-container cc--rich-text \"\n\n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  >\n  <div class=\"c--component c--rich-text\"\n    \n      >\n\n    \n      \n<div class=\"f--field f--wysiwyg\">\n\n    \n  <ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>First, submit an interest form<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In this interest form, we ask for basic information, such as age, hearing abilities, and contact information. These questions help determine if you are eligible to participate in our study. We will be accepting interest forms from early December 2025 through mid-February 2026.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are eligible for participation, we will contact you via your preferred contact method to schedule a Zoom meeting. This <\/span><b>Zoom meeting<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will last approximately <\/span><b>one hour<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and the purpose is to further confirm your eligibility for the study. In this Zoom meeting, we will tell you more about the study, answer any questions you have, then you will take a hearing test and a series of questionnaires. We will tell you immediately whether you are eligible to participate, and you can choose to enroll in the study or not (or you can take some time to think about it).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every step of this process is voluntary, and if you choose not to enroll or if you opt out of the study partway through, there will be no impact on your standing with the USC research team.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n  <\/div><\/div>\n            \n                      <\/div>\n        <\/li>\n\n              <li>\n          <button type=\"button\" class=\"accordion-trigger \" id=\"heading-1-2-3F8lf8osBU\" aria-controls=\"section-1-2-3F8lf8osBU\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-disabled=\"false\">\n                          <span class=\"item-title\">2. Pre-program experimental session<\/span>\n            \n                      <\/button>\n\n          <div id=\"section-1-2-3F8lf8osBU\" role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"heading-1-2-3F8lf8osBU\" class=\"accordion-panel\">\n\n                            \n    \n\n\n\n\n\n\n<div\n  class=\"cc--component-container cc--rich-text \"\n\n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  >\n  <div class=\"c--component c--rich-text\"\n    \n      >\n\n    \n      \n<div class=\"f--field f--wysiwyg\">\n\n    \n  <ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you choose to enroll in the study, we will schedule you for an <\/span><b>experimental session at the USC campus<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Sessions will take place from early January through mid-February, and you can choose a date and time within that window that works best for you. The <\/span><b>session will last approximately two hours<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. During this experimental session, you will <\/span><b>perform tasks<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that assess music and speech perception and <\/span><b>take a series of surveys<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parking is available and it is free of charge. If you choose not to drive or are not able to, we will provide a Lyft free of charge as well.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the end of this experimental session, you will be assigned to either an <\/span><b>audiobook listening<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><b>choir program<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. We are <\/span><b>unable to honor program preferences<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as this would affect the quality of the experiment.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n  <\/div><\/div>\n            \n                      <\/div>\n        <\/li>\n\n              <li>\n          <button type=\"button\" class=\"accordion-trigger \" id=\"heading-1-3-3F8lf8osBU\" aria-controls=\"section-1-3-3F8lf8osBU\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-disabled=\"false\">\n                          <span class=\"item-title\">3. Program and mid-program testing<\/span>\n            \n                      <\/button>\n\n          <div id=\"section-1-3-3F8lf8osBU\" role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"heading-1-3-3F8lf8osBU\" class=\"accordion-panel\">\n\n                            \n    \n\n\n\n\n\n\n<div\n  class=\"cc--component-container cc--rich-text \"\n\n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  >\n  <div class=\"c--component c--rich-text\"\n    \n      >\n\n    \n      \n<div class=\"f--field f--wysiwyg\">\n\n    \n  <ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Participants will take part in their class for<b> 12 weeks. <\/b>Programs will be held at <strong>Ebell of Los Angeles<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The classes occur <strong>10:30 to 12:30 on Wednesday mornings from February 25th to mid-May<\/strong><\/span><b>.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the <\/span><b>audiobook club<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, participants collectively decide from a selection which audiobook to listen to for the duration of the course. Prior to each class, participants<\/span><b> listen to an hour of the audiobook<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. They then <\/span><b>discuss as a group<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> during class, with guidance from an instructor.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the <\/span><b>group singing class<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with the help of instructors and a piano accompanist, participants will<\/span><b> learn songs and sing them together<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in a supportive and casual environment. Each week, participants complete an hour of pitch training \u201chomework\u201d on their own time using an application called \u201cTheta Music Trainer\u201d.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the <\/span><b>2nd, 7th, and 11th week of the intervention<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, further <\/span><b>data will be collected at Ebell<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from participants before and after class. This mid-intervention testing will include heart rate measures and a few short questionnaires assessing mood and social well-being. These will be administered by USC research staff, and care will be taken to minimize disruption for participants.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n  <\/div><\/div>\n            \n                      <\/div>\n        <\/li>\n\n              <li>\n          <button type=\"button\" class=\"accordion-trigger \" id=\"heading-1-4-3F8lf8osBU\" aria-controls=\"section-1-4-3F8lf8osBU\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-disabled=\"false\">\n                          <span class=\"item-title\">4. Post-program experimental session<\/span>\n            \n                      <\/button>\n\n          <div id=\"section-1-4-3F8lf8osBU\" role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"heading-1-4-3F8lf8osBU\" class=\"accordion-panel\">\n\n                            \n    \n\n\n\n\n\n\n<div\n  class=\"cc--component-container cc--rich-text \"\n\n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  >\n  <div class=\"c--component c--rich-text\"\n    \n      >\n\n    \n      \n<div class=\"f--field f--wysiwyg\">\n\n    \n  <p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the class\/intervention has finished, participants will <\/span><b>return to USC<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for a visit that is <\/span><b>identical to the pre-intervention testing.<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n  <\/div><\/div>\n            \n                      <\/div>\n        <\/li>\n\n              <li>\n          <button type=\"button\" class=\"accordion-trigger \" id=\"heading-1-5-3F8lf8osBU\" aria-controls=\"section-1-5-3F8lf8osBU\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-disabled=\"false\">\n                          <span class=\"item-title\">Financial Compensation and Transportation<\/span>\n            \n                      <\/button>\n\n          <div id=\"section-1-5-3F8lf8osBU\" role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"heading-1-5-3F8lf8osBU\" class=\"accordion-panel\">\n\n                            \n    \n\n\n\n\n\n\n<div\n  class=\"cc--component-container cc--rich-text \"\n\n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  >\n  <div class=\"c--component c--rich-text\"\n    \n      >\n\n    \n      \n<div class=\"f--field f--wysiwyg\">\n\n    \n  <p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You will be compensated at a rate of $25 an hour for your screening appointment and pre- and post-program visits. Lyfts will be provided for your visits to USC should you not have access to convenient transportation.
