Why did you decide to do a MA/Major in East Asian Area Studies (EAAS)?

My Japanese Literature professors at UCI sparked my passion for higher education and inspired me to follow suit.

Are there any EAAS related courses or events that have been particularly memorable?

I loved learning about East Asian Gang films from Professor Tsang, and am extremely grateful for having the opportunity to publish a project in an academic journal with the help of Professor Desjardins – I feel like these are very unique opportunities not offered anywhere else!

Can you tell us bout your research focus or interests? Is there any project/internship/work you are currently working on that you would like to share?

I am currently working on a project for RJCS spotlighting Los Angeles-based artist Takako Yamaguchi and her recent exhibition held at MOCA. My thesis explores the trajectory of the yankee manga genre, uncovering and analyzing hidden subculture histories while examining the functions of Japan’s evolving media economy.

Do you have any advice for incoming students?

Work hard and don’t stress too much; everything will work itself out!

What are your plans after graduation?

Teaching English in Japan to sharpen my Japanese speaking skills – a little break before going back to school.
