For over a decade, the Department of English has hosted The Boudreaux Visiting Writers Series<\/strong>, welcoming one poet per academic year to hold a reading and workshop with our doctoral students.<\/p>\n

This reading is held annually courtesy of a gift from the Beau Boudreaux Family. Their generosity allows us to invite some of the most compelling poets in the United States to USC.<\/p>\n

Brenda Hillman was born in Tucson, Arizona and has been an active part of the Bay Area literary community since 1975. She has published chapbooks with\u00a0Penumbra Press, a+bend press, EmPress, A Minus Press, and Albion Books and is the author of eleven full-length collections from Wesleyan University Press, the most recent of which are\u00a0Seasonal Works with Letters on Fire\u00a0<\/em>(2013), which received\u00a0the International Griffin Poetry Prize and\u00a0Extra Hidden Life, among the Days<\/em>\u00a0(2018) winner of the\u00a0Northern California Book Award. In a Few Minutes Before Later , <\/em>\u00a0her latest collection, will be published in fall 2022. Hillman has also received the William Carlos Williams Prize from Poetry Society of America, the Academy of American Poets Fellowship, and the Los Angeles Times<\/em>\u00a0Book Award. She has edited an edition of Emily Dickinson\u2019s poems for Shambhala Press, co-edited two books by Richard O. Moore, and, with Patricia Dienstfrey, co-edited\u00a0The Grand Permission<\/em>:\u00a0New Writings on Poetics and Motherhood<\/em>\u00a0(Wesleyan, 2003). She has worked as a co-translator of three books:\u00a0Poems from Above the Hill<\/em>\u00a0by Ashur Etwebi,\u00a0Instances<\/em>\u00a0by Jeongrye Choi, and\u00a0At Your Feet<\/em>\u00a0by Ana Cristina Cesar, all from Free Verse Editions\/Parlor Press. Her first book of prose essays, Three Talks<\/em>, will be published by University of Virginia Press in spring 2023. She serves on the regular poetry staff at Community of Writers in Olympic Valley and at Napa Valley Writers Conference. Hillman teaches at St. Mary\u2019s College in Moraga, California. She has worked as an activist for social and environmental justice.\u00a0She is a mother, a grandmother, and is married to poet Robert Hass.<\/p>\n
