f--wysiwyg\">\n\n    \n  <p>There\u2019s a spider alive because of Nick Shindo Street.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Nick, a Buddhist, had convinced his colleague Najuma Smith, a Christian minister, that spiders were God\u2019s creation and deserved to live. So when Nick became seriously ill this summer, Najuma could not bring herself to clear an Orbweaver\u2019s huge web that was terrorizing her and her kids above their parking spot. \u201cYou\u2019re only still here because of Nick!\u201d she told the spider.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>It is just one act that Nick\u2019s colleagues at the USC Center for Religion and Civic Culture pray will be added to his list of good deeds.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Nick died on Friday, September 8, 2023. His legacy at CRCC is both personal and professional, influencing his colleagues through his storytelling and editing, as well as through his spirit.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>As CRCC\u2019s storyteller, Nick eloquently crafted articles and reports that showed how faith leaders and organizations operate in the world.<\/p>\n<h5><a I will forever hear his voice in my mind reminding me to \u2018show it, not tell it,\u2019\u201d said Hebah Farrag, CRCC\u2019s assistant director of research.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>A former book editor with a master&#8217;s degree in theology, Nick helped the Rev. Dr. Cecil L. \u201cChip\u201d Murray write his memoir, <a href=\"https:\/\/crcc.usc.edu\/twice-tested-by-fire-a-memoir-of-faith-and-service\/\"><em>Twice Tested By Fire: A Memoir of Faith and Service<\/em><\/a>. He also edited Richard Flory and Melinda Denton\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/crcc.usc.edu\/back-pocket-god-religion-and-spirituality-in-the-lives-of-emerging-adults\/\"><em>Back Pocket God: Religion and Spirituality in the Lives of Emerging Adults<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Former colleague Andrew Johnson said he would trust no one else to edit his award-winning book, <a href=\"https:\/\/crcc.usc.edu\/if-i-give-my-soul-faith-behind-bars-in-rio-de-janeiro\/\"><em>If I Give My Soul: Faith Behind Bars in Rio de Janeiro<\/em><\/a>. Nick would improve the readability of text while retaining the author\u2019s intent. \u201cIt\u2019s you but better,\u201d Nick would joke, referencing the Maybelline tagline.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>He helped Tarra McNally complete her dissertation, and his last work trip was to help Nalika Gajaweera with her forthcoming manuscript on Buddhists of color navigating and working to change predominantly white convert Buddhist meditation institutions.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>He was more than an \u201cally,\u201d Nalika said. \u201cHe put in the work to empower other minorities like myself to feel emboldened and find our voice, without shouting to make a point that he was doing something. My colleague Ann Gleig pointed out that he was comfortable around strong feminist women, never feeling like he had to impose himself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>His colleagues found it remarkable that whomever he interacted with \u2013 Catholic nuns, Muslims, Pentecostals \u2013 were drawn to him and felt comfortable opening up to him, even if they might not accept who he was as a gay man. Nick was genuinely curious about the world and its people, particularly those on the margins of society. He was always eager for an adventure \u2013 whether <a href=\"https:\/\/crcc.usc.edu\/ayahuasca-naut-a-zen-students-experiment-with-shamanic-medicine\/\">journeying inward<\/a> or to far-off lands, <a href=\"https:\/\/crcc.usc.edu\/religion-and-conflict-in-nigeria-learning-to-play-well-with-others\/\">Nigeria<\/a> being a favorite destination. People trusted that Nick would tell their stories with integrity.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Nick came to USC in 2005 to study journalism with Diane Winston, the Knight Chair for Media and Religion, and by the time he graduated in 2007 had become her good friend. Nick worked for Diane, editing a media criticism website and helping her arrange programs and student reporting experiences abroad.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>The happiest Diane saw him was when he became a Zen Buddhist priest at the Hazy Moon Zen Center, where he was known by his dharma name, &#8220;Shindo.&#8221; A Zen priest for 15 years, Nick described himself as a Buddhist with a touch of hedonism. He still enjoyed drinking Manhattans until illness made him decide to cut out alcohol. At CRCC, Nick\u2019s practice was evident, not only in the incense in his office (that he was instructed not to light), but also in his mindful, focused energy.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe taught me the importance of slowing down, listening and focusing on people instead of my to-do list, and everything he produced was done with care,\u201d said Megan Sweas, CRCC\u2019s editor and director of communication.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Nick started working at CRCC in 2011, getting the opportunity to travel the world to capture the work being done by researchers in 20 countries through the Pentecostal and Charismatic Research Initiative. He created a magazine-style report, <a href=\"\/crcc\/report\/moved-by-the-spirit-pentecostal-and-charismatic-christianity-in-the-global-south\/\">\u201cMoved by the Spirit,\u201d<\/a> summarizing the impact of the global initiative.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Nick frequently lent his storytelling skills to the Cecil Murray Center, capturing the<a href=\"\/crcc\/report\/passing-the-mantle-a-new-generation-of-leaders-in-the-black-church\/\"> impact of programming<\/a> to help Black and Brown church leaders <a href=\"\/crcc\/report\/community-transformation-outlining-a-process-for-change\/\">transform their communities<\/a> through economic development and civic engagement. He also interviewed fellows with CRCC\u2019s American Muslim Civic Leadership Institute (for instance, this story on <a href=\"\/crcc\/african-american-muslims-and-the-lapd-moving-from-stories-to-solutions\/\">Umar Hakim<\/a>\u2019s work in South LA), and earned a Pulitzer Center award to learn about <a href=\"\/crcc\/the-other-muslim-fringe-muslim-activism-in-europe\/\">Muslim civic leadership in Europe<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Journalists must find and tell stories of \u201cinvisible Muslims\u201d rather than write about Muslims only in the context of terrorism, he argued in <a href=\"\/crcc\/the-invisible-muslims-reporting-about-islam-in-america\/\">Nieman Reports<\/a>. In a video on his experience reporting in Europe, he compared the coverage of Muslims to that of LGBT people, both confined to a limited range of emotional registers, either fear or pity. &#8220;It was gratifying for me to offer a corrective to that narrowcasting in news media coverage, but also lift up voices that weren&#8217;t being heard,&#8221; he reflected.<\/p>\n<div class=\"video-embed\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Other Muslim Fringe: Meet Journalist Nick Street\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/rRytSBPEkxc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:embed {\"url\":\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/rRytSBPEkxc?si=IEOeMsZLBL9gMh6a\",\"type\":\"video\",\"providerNameSlug\":\"youtube\",\"responsive\":true,\"className\":\"wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"} --><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:spacer --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe built relationships with marginalized communities, centered their voices and experiences in all aspects of the work,\u201d said Soraya Ahyaudin, AMCLI director and CRCC\u2019s assistant director of learning design and programs.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Working with CRCC researchers, Nick had the opportunity to put on a social scientist hat and do data analysis, which his detail oriented brain enjoyed. At the same time, he relished in being able to \u201cmake broad generalizations with a few data points\u201d as a journalist, while his colleagues looked for nuance in large samples.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>In a project on <a href=\"\/crcc\/mapping-the-new-landscape-of-religion-in-los-feliz\/\">religious creativity and innovation<\/a>, Nick worked alongside researchers to conduct case studies on groups like <a href=\"\/crcc\/hampers-of-hope-in-harbor-city\/\">Laundry Love<\/a>, Share-a-Meal, and <a href=\"\/crcc\/building-the-future-of-religion-one-burrito-at-a-time-service-groups-and-religious-nones\/\">The Burrito Project<\/a>, that allowed people of all faiths and none <a href=\"\/crcc\/charting-the-future-of-religion\/\">to find meaning<\/a>. He documented how religious organizations <a href=\"\/crcc\/religion-on-the-move-in-los-feliz\/\">moved around a neighborhood<\/a> and found unlikely partnerships. Nick also led presentations and panels on <a href=\"https:\/\/fb.watch\/n3cTEqRQlE\/\">religious \u201cnones\u201d<\/a> (1:05 into video) and new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=qkt75gE_fv4\">communities of healing<\/a>, which he started with a meditation:<\/p>\n<div class=\"video-embed\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Reimagining Religion 2018: New Communities of Healing\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/qkt75gE_fv4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><!-- \/wp:embed --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:spacer {\"height\":\"25px\"} --><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:spacer --><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:image {\"align\":\"right\",\"id\":100652,\"width\":248,\"height\":260,\"sizeSlug\":\"large\",\"linkDestination\":\"none\"} -->Most recently, he wrote about six people dedicated to human flourishing through the <a href=\"\/crcc\/engaged-spirituality\">Spiritual Exemplars Project<\/a>. Though the pandemic kept him from traveling as much as he would have liked, he was able to meet culture bearers and activists preserving Indigenous traditions for future generations in the <a href=\"\/crcc\/sapis-struggle-indigenous-resistance-to-cultural-assimilation-in-the-philippines\/\">Philippines<\/a> and <a href=\"\/crcc\/kumu-hina-and-walter-ritte-a-very-hawaiian-place\/\">Hawaii<\/a>, while also helping his researcher colleagues tell their stories. The Hawaii trip was also personally meaningful, as his dad had been stationed at Schofield Barracks in northern Oahu before Nick was born.<br \/>\n<!-- \/wp:image --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>During the pandemic, Nick moved to Birmingham, Alabama to be closer to family, but continued to work remotely for CRCC. He profiled <a href=\"\/crcc\/caroline-bundy-finding-grace-for-homeless-youth-and-lgbtq-in-alabama\/\">a local woman<\/a> who spearheaded an effort to open a shelter for homeless youth, and connected CRCC with faith leaders working to improve Birmingham. During this time, he also began to apply what he had learned at CRCC about leadership, innovation and collaboration, and created the <a href=\"https:\/\/alabamameditationnetwork.com\/\">Alabama Meditation Network<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Having disrobed as Buddhist priest when he left Los Angeles, he filled his spiritual needs by sitting in meditation with as many groups as possible in Birmingham. He saw that by connecting these groups, they could collaborate to offer their members more than they could create on their own. Through the Alabama Meditation Network, Nick organized two successful retreats among the various groups, and was looking forward to taking a step back and seeing others lead a retreat this fall.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Outside of work, Nick was working on a sci-fi novel. He frequently put on a \u201ctin foil hat\u201d during our annual discussions of trends in religion, and joyfully contributed predictions on <a href=\"\/crcc\/five-trends-to-watch-in-religion-in-2017-culture-wars-compounds-the-next-reformation\/\">cults<\/a>, <a href=\"\/crcc\/the-liminal-year-5-trends-to-watch-in-religion-in-2018\/\">UFOs<\/a> and dystopian futures among more serious topics.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Yet Nick was ultimately hopeful.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:image {\"align\":\"left\",\"id\":100639,\"width\":182,\"height\":242,\"sizeSlug\":\"large\",\"linkDestination\":\"none\"} --><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:image --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-105632 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/crcc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/105\/2023\/09\/Nick-Butterfly-400x534-1.jpg\" alt=\"Butterflies dance in front of Nick Street in Korea\" width=\"400\" height=\"534\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/crcc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/105\/2023\/09\/Nick-Butterfly-400x534-1.jpg 400w, https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/crcc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/105\/2023\/09\/Nick-Butterfly-400x534-1-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/>A lover of science, Nick often described how a caterpillar becomes a \u201cgoo\u201d of imaginal cells within its chrysalis (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/usccrcc\/videos\/10154314723362361\">listen at 1:12<\/a>). Though no discernable brain remains during this stage, the butterfly could remember experiences from its caterpillar stage of life. Like the caterpillar\u2019s metamorphosis into a butterfly, Nick suggested, religious institutions could transform as well, their imaginal cells bringing their essence into the future.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>As he wrote on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/permalink.php?story_fbid=pfbid0EsZ1ZN99PaPxQw6BUJf5Tzm8NALL4XMFiD344PG2FoNDdWHZfotVTLQCT2uKUHgLl&amp;id=100009947683533\">Facebook<\/a> a while back:<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#8217;m basically an optimistic person. In the midst of loss, suffering and hardship, there&#8217;s always beauty and kindness. The thangka I bought around this time last year&#8211;depicting an androgynous being who embodies wisdom and compassion&#8211;reminds me to jettison assumptions and be open to possibilities. Come apocalypse or utopia or some muddle in between, imma be ready!\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThrough his quiet manner, incisive thinking and quick wit, Nick had an enormous impact on the work of CRCC and on each of our lives,\u201d said Richard Flory, CRCC\u2019s executive director. \u201cHis absence leaves a void that will be difficult to fill. It is our hope that Nick\u2019s personal spiritual practice helped him find peace at the end of his life. His beauty and kindness will live on through his words, his deeds and the tremendous influence he had on his family, friends and colleagues.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Nick is survived by his brother James (Tad) Street and his wife Christin Street, his nephew and niece, Sam and Emily, and numerous extended family members that adored him.
