With the United Methodist Church facing a possible schism over gay clergy and marriage, KCRW<\/a> asked CRCC Executive Director Brie Loskota<\/a> to explain the divisions around LGBT rights in religious communities, and how church positions affect the faith of young people.<\/p>\n

Here is an excerpt from the interview:\n<\/p>\n

“For many people who are younger, particularly younger than  religion itself is not a default that they say, ‘I need religion in my life.’ In fact many people that they know are deeply irreligious or religiously ambivalent. If you don’t know anybody who goes to a church, a mosque or a synagogue, then it becomes very normal for you to not even think in those categories. And if then, your world is populated by people who are deeply diverse, including with how they look and who they love, the idea of a religious atuthority that you may not understand or may not respect, tells you that they are wrong, goes agains the zeitgeist of this generation, which is really focused on individual authority of their lives.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Richard Flory also served as a background source on the story about two United Methodist churches that fall on opposite sides of the debate.<\/p>\n
