Dr. Cecil L. &#8220;Chip&#8221; Murray spent his &#8220;retirement&#8221; sharing his model of leadership and vision of Christian social ethics to a new generation of faith leaders. Murray had an illustrious career at First AME Church of Los Angeles, during which he transformed a small church into a megachurch, helped guide the city through the 1992 civil unrest and created a non-profit arm of the church that brought jobs, investment and housing to South Los Angeles. When he retired, he started a program called &#8220;Passing the Mantle&#8221; at the USC Center for Religion and Civic Culture. At USC, he trained 1,000 faith leaders in the work of faith leadership, economic empowerment and civic engagement. Rev. Murray died earlier this year at age 94.<\/p>\n<p>The retirement or death of influential faith leaders poses a challenge to their successors and the congregations they leave behind \u2014 how to best continue their legacy, while adapting to new circumstances.
