\u201cCheering for the Cubs is like praying to Allah,\u201d my cousin, a White Sox fanatic and evangelical Christian, once quipped over Christmas dinner. According to such logic, the mislabeling of Pope Leo XIV as a Chicago Cubs fan must have been a grave sin.<\/p>\n

Somewhat sacrilegiously, my cousins topped their Christmas tree with a Marlins hat that year after the team had prevented the Cubs from reaching the World Series. As a pluralistically minded Catholic Cubs fan, I retorted that \u201cAllah\u201d just means \u201cGod\u201d in another language. Two years later, my dad attended Game One of the White Sox World Series, along\u00a0with the future\u00a0pope<\/a>. I was happy to celebrate their World Series win with my Sox-loving dad and cousins.<\/p>\n

Now, the\u00a0Archdiocese of Chicago is hosting a\u00a0celebratory Mass<\/a>\u00a0for the world\u2019s most famous White Sox fan,\u00a0Pope\u00a0Leo XIV, at the Rate Field on June 14.\u00a0My sanctimonious reflection on my family’s baseball rivalry speaks to what may be a defining characteristic of the new Chicago\u00a0pope\u00a0\u2014 and to the continued importance of\u00a0popes in the 21st\u00a0century.<\/p>\n

\u201cDa\u00a0pope\u201d is more than an interesting novelty. At a time when our country and world are as divided as Cubs and Sox fans,\u00a0Pope\u00a0Leo XIV has the potential to lead us away from our rivalries.<\/p>\n

Many people walk through the world with a perspective of rivalry \u2014 of good or bad, in or out, winner or loser. Some Catholics would like the church to be a \u201csmall tent\u201d \u2014 a church of true believers. In this worldview, cradle Catholics who disagree with or fail to live up to the church’s ideals are not deserving of inclusion.<\/p>\n

The place of non-Catholics may be even more precarious. Before the Second Vatican Council, the Catholic Church’s theology justified pogroms against Jews. We only have to reverse course two years to regain the\u00a0Doctrine of Discovery<\/a>, which justified the genocide of Indigenous peoples. The spirit of the Holy Crusades against Muslims seems to animate the current U.S.\u00a0secretary of defense<\/a>.<\/p>\n

We are all curious to see how\u00a0Pope\u00a0Leo XIV will engage with the Trump administration. The\u00a0Chicago Archdiocese\u2019s upcoming celebration of the\u00a0pope, an American-Peruvian dual citizen, stands in contrast to the\u00a0military parade<\/a>\u00a0being hosted in Washington, D.C., on the same day.<\/p>\n

At the same time, the Catholic Church has seen\u00a0empires rise and fall<\/a>. I am confident that the cardinals \u2014 or the Holy Spirit that guided them \u2014 were considering the long game when choosing\u00a0Pope\u00a0Leo XIV.<\/p>\n

Like\u00a0Pope\u00a0Francis,\u00a0Pope\u00a0Leo XIV imagines Catholicism as\u00a0a “big tent”<\/a>\u00a0that includes everyone, with\u00a0synodality<\/em>\u00a0the method for dealing with the diversity within that tent. In a synodal church, leaders are guided by theology, tradition\u00a0and\u00a0consultations with ordinary Catholics \u2013 the \u201cPeople of God.\u201d<\/p>\n

Listening is not values free. It requires opening the tent doors and brings those on the margins into the center, even if they do not determine what results from the conversation.<\/p>\n

Grounded in a moral perspective, this approach to pluralism provides a model of leadership for our society.<\/p>\n

Many spoke of a \u201cPope Francis effect\u201d after he was elected. I reported on\u00a0this \u201ceffect\u201d<\/a>\u00a0on Europe’s migration crisis in Italy and saw how Francis inspired Catholics to open doors and hearts to the\u00a0mostly Muslim migrants<\/a>\u00a0arriving on Italy\u2019s shores. Many credited his moral leadership with the funding of the naval operation that saved hundreds of thousands of migrants from the Mediterranean Sea. Francis argued both that Jesus compels his followers to welcome the stranger (Matthew 25:35)\u00a0and<\/em>\u00a0that Europe’s humanist values require care for those beyond its borders.<\/p>\n

Popes and religious leaders may not solve humanity\u2019s great crises, but they shape the narratives that shape our world.<\/p>\n

Before Francis, Pope\u00a0John Paul II played a\u00a0significant role<\/a>\u00a0in the fall of the Soviet Union and end of the Cold War. Environmentalist Bill McKibben\u00a0recently argued<\/a>\u00a0that\u00a0Pope\u00a0Francis\u2019 encyclical on the environment helped spur on the Paris Climate Accords. The lead diplomat of the Paris Climate Accords also credits the teaching of Buddhist monk\u00a0Thich Nhat Hanh<\/a>\u00a0with helping her generate consensus for the agreement \u2014 thanks to a process of listening that reflects the idea of synodality.<\/p>\n

Exemplary people, the philosopher Linda Zagzebski argues, are\u00a0foundational to moral theory<\/a>.\u00a0In other words, we learn morality through our admiration and emulation of extraordinary individuals \u2014 saints \u2014 in the Catholic tradition.<\/p>\n

Certainly, our world is filled with greed, anger and violence.\u00a0My colleagues at the University of Southern California and I studied the lives of\u00a0100 “spiritual exemplars”<\/a>\u00a0across faiths and found that religion inspires and sustains them\u00a0to be\u00a0counter-cultural<\/em><\/a>, to\u00a0go against the stream in their efforts to care for others.\u00a0They show us what humanity is capable of at our best.<\/p>\n

If moral voices are absent \u2014 if religious leaders look inward in a small tent \u2014 society is left\u00a0with self-interested political leaders promoting destructive worldviews.<\/p>\n

In addition, the\u00a0American\u00a0pope\u00a0has a\u00a0brother<\/a>\u00a0who embraces the MAGA narrative, which labels empathy as toxic. While\u00a0Pope\u00a0Leo XIV may not be \u201cliberal,\u201d his online criticism of the Trump administration\u2019s treatment of migrants stands in contrast to that of his brother, who said he will\u00a0\u201ctone it down<\/a>.\u201d\u00a0My own extended family remains as divided, not only in baseball, but also in religion and politics.<\/p>\n

It’s hard to know what the \u201cPope\u00a0Leo XIV effect\u201d may look like, but like his predecessor, he could leave a mark on the church and the world by promoting morally grounded dialogue and compassion. Pope\u00a0Leo XIV already\u00a0asked media professionals<\/a>\u00a0to \u201csay no to the war of words.\u201d<\/p>\n

When Vice President J.D. Vance, whose has been chastised by two\u00a0popes, gave a gift to the new\u00a0pope, he avoided the Cubs-Sox rivalry in favor of symbol of unity for Chicagoans:\u00a0a Chicago Bears jersey.<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cGood choice,\u201d\u00a0Pope\u00a0Leo XIV responded.<\/p>\n

He then gave Vance a gift with a strong message: \u201cPeace is a fragile flower.\u201d<\/p>\n
