f--wysiwyg\">\n\n    \n  <p>A new generation of computers, dubbed \u201cquantum computers,\u201d is making big waves, revolutionizing major industries like artificial intelligence and drug discovery.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re going to discover new materials, new pharmaceuticals, new phases of matter. Maybe we\u2019ll solve problems in astronomy and cosmology and particle physics using quantum computers that we can\u2019t even approach today,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/viterbi.usc.edu\/directory\/faculty\/Lidar\/Daniel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniel Lidar<\/a>, professor of electrical and computer engineering, chemistry, and physics and astronomy at the USC Viterbi School of Engineering and USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences.<\/p>\n<p>Lidar, who holds the Viterbi Professorship in Engineering, and <a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/profile\/rosa-di-felice\/\">Rosa Di Felice<\/a>, associate professor of <a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/physics\/\">physics and astronomy<\/a> at USC Dornsife, recently sat down to discuss the potential and challenges of this computing revolution.<\/p>\n<p>The discussion was part of a Feb. 28 Dornsife Dialogues event moderated by USC Dornsife Interim Dean and Professor of Physics and Astronomy and Chemistry <a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/profile\/moh-el-naggar\/\">Moh El-Naggar<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"video-embed\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Quantum Leap: How Quantum Computing Redefines What&#039;s Possible\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9yX7yP54Jdc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><strong>How it works:<\/strong> Quantum computing uses quantum mechanics to process information in ways that classical computers cannot. Unlike traditional computers, which use bits (0s and 1s), quantum computers use <strong>qubits<\/strong>, which can exist in multiple states at once, allowing them to solve complex problems much faster.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why it matters:<\/strong> Di Felice and Lidar predict that, in the next five to 10 years:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Quantum simulation will assist in drug discovery, advance our understanding of diseases, and find better medical treatments. Lidar recently used quantum computing to help uncover a gene that plays a role in whether someone develops severe symptoms from COVID-19.<\/li>\n<li>It will be used to create better building materials for airplanes and other machinery, an area of study Di Felice has <a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/stories\/usc-dornsifes-rosa-di-felice-earns-recognition-in-the-airbus-bmw-quantum-computing-challenge\/\">already made strides in<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Advances in quantum machine learning will greatly accelerate AI\u2019s capabilities by generating enormous amounts of novel data for AI systems to train on.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Of note:<\/strong> USC was an early adopter of quantum computing. In 2011, it became the first university in the United States to host a quantum computing system, the D-Wave One, housed at the <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.usc.edu\/cqist\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">USC Center for Quantum Information Science and Technology<\/a>. Global institutions are investing heavily in this area to ensure future security standards remain robust.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Opportunity:<\/strong> In addition to its groundbreaking quantum research, USC is also training the field\u2019s future pioneers. USC Viterbi offers a <a href=\"https:\/\/viterbigradadmission.usc.edu\/programs\/masters\/msprograms\/electrical-computer-engineering\/ms-in-quantum-information-science\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Master\u2019s Degree in Quantum Information Science<\/a>.
