NOVEMBER<\/strong><\/span> – Kyla Thomas<\/a> and LABarometer<\/a> were featured in Dornsife News<\/a> showing that nearly half of Angelenos say their block has enough shade even though most live on tree-sparse streets.<\/span><\/p>\n

NOVEMBER<\/strong><\/span> – <\/span>CESR East’s Francisco Perez-Arce<\/a> was featured in AARP<\/a>, going over micro-changes in information policy wording can have measurable effects on people\u2019s retirement decision-making.<\/p>\n

OCTOBER<\/b><\/span><\/span> – Ritika Chaturvedi<\/a> and company\u2019s article on Fitbits got some traction on EurekAlert!<\/a> and Bioengineer.org.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

SEPTEMBER<\/strong><\/span> – <\/span>Deborah Finkel<\/a> was featured in NPR’s The Academic Minute<\/a>, speakingon the effect of childhood money stress.<\/p>\n

Deborah was also in Dornsife News<\/a>, as they covered a multi-university twin study led in part by USC Dornsife researchers finding that accelerated biological aging, amplified by early-life disadvantage, is linked to cognitive decline later in life.<\/p>\n

AUGUST<\/strong><\/span> –\u00a0<\/span>Zachary Wagner<\/a> was featured in the VoxDev podcast<\/a>, to discuss his paper showing that targeted interventions can reduce provider bias in family planning clinics and improve care for young women \u2014 an important step toward advancing global reproductive health and gender equity. This paper was also covered in AAAS and EurekAlert!<\/a> in June 2025.<\/p>\n

AUGUST<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0– <\/span>Livia Montana<\/a> was quoted in Vox<\/a> on the shuttering of DHS. Without the data DHS provided, foreign aid becomes less effective, and less accountable \u201cWe have no way of externally or objectively estimating the positive impact that those [aid] programs are having, or negative,\u201d said Livia Montana, the former deputy director of the DHS Program, who is now a survey director for the Understanding America Study at the University of Southern California.<\/p>\n

JULY<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0–\u00a0<\/span>Dornsife News<\/a> covered the work of Titus Galama<\/a> and the Center for the Study of Human Capital<\/a> about their findings\u00a0that for unemployed men, mental health improves significantly after 50 \u2014 not because of aging or more leisure time, but because retirement becomes socially acceptable.<\/p>\n

MAY<\/strong><\/span> – Dornsife News<\/a> and Swedish newspaper J\u00f6nk\u00f6pings-Posten<\/a> featured the work<\/a> of Deborah Finkel<\/a>, which concludes that self-reported financial stress in both childhood and adulthood impact trajectories of change in depressive symptoms, anxiety, and loneliness in late adulthood. There is a surprising long-term effect of childhood even when adulthood financial strain is accounted for, and that positive experiences in adulthood can lessen impact of childhood strain.<\/span><\/p>\n

APRIL<\/strong> <\/span>– <\/span>Dornsife News<\/a> reported on the latest LABarometer<\/a> survey and the assessment on how recent wildfires like the one in L.A. County\u2019s Altadena neighborhood affected Angelenos based on their housing stability.<\/p>\n

NOVEMBER<\/strong><\/span> – Lila Rabinovich was featured in The Conversation<\/a> on her work funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation looking at women and fiancial literacy; struggling particularly at older ages.<\/span><\/p>\n

OCTOBER<\/strong> <\/span>– USC Dornsife put out a press release<\/a> announcing a new NIH study led by CESR Researchers Soeren Mattke and Ying Liu on the importance of diagnosing early cognitive impairment.\u00a0 The study was quickly picked up and featured in TIME Magazine<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

SEPTEMBER<\/strong><\/span> – The Understanding America Study is referenced in this article<\/a> in the Washington Post about the end of paper checks and the near death of cash. The Atlanta Fed has been collecting annual payment preference data in the UAS for many years and had noted these trends along with other growing trends in app based payments and bitcoin ownership.<\/span><\/p>\n

New release on findings in LA county on food insecurity, using the Understanding America Study<\/a>.\u00a0 Throughout 2022, 37% of low-income residents of Los Angeles County lacked access to sufficient food for an active, healthy life. That\u2019s 10 points more than in 2018, before the pandemic struck, according to research published by USC Dornsife\u2019s Public Exchange.<\/span><\/p>\n

Los Angeles Daily News<\/a> (via City News Service) highlighted research by Kyla Thomas of the USC Dornsife Center for Economic and Social Research that found 10% of the region\u2019s residents plan to relocate despite reporting higher consumer confidence and decreasing levels of crime in their neighborhoods. \u201cOur latest findings, which reflect the experiences of L.A. County residents during the peak of the pandemic, reveal reasons for optimism as well as concern<\/b><\/a>,\u201d she said. FEBRUARY<\/span><\/strong> – NBC News Los Angeles affiliate KNBC-TV<\/a> featured Kyla Thomas of the USC Dornsife College’s Center for Economic and Social Research and W\u00e4ndi Bruine de Bruin of the USC Price School on low rates of vaccine intent and the importance of messaging among minority populations. “We’re seeing much lower rates of vaccine acceptance<\/a>. Nationally, about 63% of our respondents say they’re somewhat or very likely to be vaccinated,” Thomas said.<\/p>\n

CW News Los Angeles affiliate KTLA-TV<\/a> featured the latest results of the USC Dornsife College’s L.A. Barometer survey, which illustrate how the pandemic has worsened existing disparities in Los Angeles. “High rates of housing insecurity very much make L.A. more vulnerable to the impact of the pandemic on public health,” said survey director Kyla Thomas. SEPTEMBER<\/span><\/strong> – Let the UAS election tracking poll begin! News release<\/a> on our new methodology and some early results. \u00a0Los Angeles Times<\/a>featured the latest results of the USC Dornsife College’s Daybreak Poll, which highlighted the challenges Joe Biden and Donald Trump are facing as the election draws near. “So far, few voters are focused on climate change as a deciding issue in the campaign. It will be interesting to see if that changes as the campaign progresses,” said Jill Darling of the USC Dornsife College’s Center for Economic and Social Research.<\/p>\n

AUGUST<\/span><\/strong> – Our Daybreak Election poll is back! USC Dornsife sent out the press release today.<\/a>\u00a0In addition to our Coronavirus Tracking poll, we have now added an election opinion poll which looks at social networks and voting probabilities. \u00a0Similar to other years, the sample is asked each week for their opinions and the data evolves nightly<\/a>. \u00a0Mentioned many places, including CNN<\/a>.<\/p>\n

JULY<\/span> <\/strong>– This month the UAS work on Understanding Corona virus in America focused on mental health, parenting, and\u00a0discrimination, the latter\u00a0highlighted in this interview Ying Liu gave to ABC7<\/a>.\u00a0 We were featured on many local news stations including KCAL9,\u00a0KABC News<\/a>, KCBS<\/a>,\u00a0and Fox11. \u00a0Our data was also mentioned in the LA Times<\/a>\u00a0in an article about youth behavior during the virus. \u00a0A\u00a0number of tables were presented in the article from LA County which use our data in their analysis. \u00a0We were also featured in the New York Times in a piece on parenting challenges<\/a> during the virus, and a quote from Gema Zamarro on our findings that show 44% of women report to be the sole caregivers in two-parent homes during the stay at home orders.<\/p>\n

JUNE<\/span><\/strong> – Daniel Bennett was featured in a number of news sources discussing Understanding Corona Virus in America’s findings on mental health. \u00a0NBC<\/a>\u00a0interview highlighted the worry of\u00a0Angelenos, as did\u00a0MyNewsLA<\/a>.\u00a0UPI featured mental health findings from Johns Hopkins and\u00a0USC<\/a>. \u00a0HealthDay<\/a>\u00a0also picked up the story tracking mental health effects of\u00a0Covid.<\/p>\n

MAY<\/span><\/strong> – Our Covid19 UAS\u00a0tracking poll is in the news: \u00a0Arie Kapteyn was interviewed on ABC news this morning<\/a> on how the job losses are affecting Los Angeles and women more so than other groups. \u00a0More coverage in the Pasadena Star<\/a>,\u00a0San Gabriel Valley Tribune<\/a>and the Daily News<\/a>\u00a0on LA County being hard hit economically by the virus. On May 12th USC released this press release on behavior changes<\/a>\u00a0from our Understanding Cornona Virus in America study,\u00a0which was picked up by CityLab<\/a>.<\/p>\n

APRIL<\/span><\/strong> – Covid-19\u00a0panel data is being collected each week on the Understanding America Study. CESR\u00a0researchers\u00a0Lila Rabinovich and\u00a0Anya Samek\u00a0were featured on CBS news<\/a> for their work on Social Security claiming and regret.<\/p>\n

JULY<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0– Dornsife\u00a0media issued a press release<\/a> to summarize\u00a0a new publication in Nature Genetics,\u00a0<\/em>about\u00a0Daniel Benjamin’s massive undertaking with the Social Science Genetic Association\u00a0Consortium (link to article FAQs here<\/a>) to try to find which genes affect educational attainment. \u00a0Carl Zimmer\u00a0of \u00a0The<\/em>\u00a0New York Times<\/em><\/a> and Ed Yong of The Atlantic<\/em><\/a> both wrote\u00a0excellent summaries of their takeaways from the paper.<\/p>\n

The Scientist<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>also featured research by Daniel Benjamin of the USC Dornsife College’s Center for Economic and Social Research on genetic markers that may predict educational attainment. Although the roughly 1,300 genes identified served as a reliable predictor for some demographics, the conclusions did not hold true for all Americans. Benjamin hopes to grow the study to more than 2 million people and expects to find thousands more genes linked to education. Slate, ABC News (Australia), IANS and Press Trust of India\u00a0highlighted the study’s findings.<\/p>\n

JUNE<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0– The Understanding America Study has been featured in the Los Angeles Times\u00a0<\/em>this month in articles utilizing data from our California Poll. \u00a0An initial article is about the Governor\u00a0race<\/a>\u00a0(Newsome is leading)\u00a0and another\u00a0about the Senate<\/a> race (most are undecided!).<\/p>\n

MAY<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0– USC Dornsife\/LA Times Poll featured in the LA Times<\/a>\u00a0May 29, 2018, on transportation issues:\u00a0local poll of\u00a0835 voters found that respondents were pretty equally divided over the high-speed rail line, with 48% expressing at least some support and 43% opposed.<\/p>\n

OCTOBER<\/span><\/strong> – Our Executive Director Arie Kapteyn\u00a0was awarded a sort of Dutch Lifetime achievement award for his work in Economics,\u00a0The Pierson Penning<\/a>. He received this honor joint with his advisor Bernard van Praag. \u00a0This medal is awarded once every three years to one of more Dutch or Netherlands based economists for their contributions to economics or the economy, with a focus on topics Pierson was interested in:(1) methods, (2) social questions; (3) the international monetary\u00a0system; (4) fair taxation. His award emphasized his work (with van Praag\u00a0and others) on interdependent preferences and subjective poverty\u00a0thresholds, but (some of) his other contributions were also mentioned. \u00a0Congratulations! \u00a0Tilburg University<\/a> also announced the event that took place at the University of Amsterdam<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Donna Spruijt-Metz is featured in an article about healthy eating and easing into a vegetarian lifestyle on WalletHub<\/a>.<\/p>\n

SEPTEMBER<\/span><\/strong>– Maria Prados and co-authors had a write up in Vox<\/a>\u00a0about their paper on the long-term benefits of early childcare. \u00a0With\u00a0Jorge Luis Garc\u00eda, James Heckman, and Duncan Ermini Leaf.<\/p>\n

AUGUST<\/span><\/strong> – Marco Angrisani, Maria Cassanova and Erik Meijer presented their paper\u00a0on working at older ages at a retirement research consortium meeting in Washington D.C.<\/a>\u00a0at the National Press Club, which was picked up for a mention in Forbes<\/a>. \u00a0One striking finding was evidence that women made a change in their\u00a0work status when their spouse experienced a health shock. \u00a0Read the full paper here<\/a>!<\/p>\n

MARCH<\/span> <\/strong>– Jinkook Lee’s Longitudinal Aging Study in India (LASI) makes the news<\/a> with its ambitious goals to study such a large population in partnership with the Indian Ministry of Health, Harvard School of Public Health, International Institute for Population Sciences, and\u00a0the National Institute on Aging.<\/p>\n

NOVEMBER<\/strong><\/span> – Jay Greene presented his work on the effect of public and private schooling on antisemitism<\/a> at the American Enterprise Institute conference. He used data from the Understanding America Study survey the University of Arkansas had developed, UAS15.<\/p>\n

November was a\u00a0month of Donna Spruijt-Metz, a\u00a0psychologist who studies the American epidemic of childhood obesity. \u00a0She has long sought a more effective way to study the family eating dynamics that lead to unhealthy weight gain, and is partnering with\u00a0a team at the University of Virginia\u2019s School of Engineering and Applied Science to construct a new, data-driven method for combatting obesity<\/a>. JUNE<\/span><\/strong> – Ashlesha Datar<\/a>\u00a0analyzed the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study and found obesity increased 20 percent among kindergartners from low- and middle-income households over the course of a decade, from 11.6 percent in the 1998-99 school year to 13.9 percent in 2009-10.
