{"id":626,"date":"2023-06-07T15:24:35","date_gmt":"2023-06-07T22:24:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/calis-temp\/?page_id=626"},"modified":"2025-08-05T10:23:36","modified_gmt":"2025-08-05T17:23:36","slug":"tirp-tips","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/calis\/tirp-tips\/","title":{"rendered":"Tips for TIRPers"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n  \n    \n\n\n\n\n\n\n<div\n  class=\"cc--component-container cc--rich-text \"\n\n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  >\n  <div class=\"c--component c--rich-text\"\n    \n      >\n\n    \n      \n<div class=\"f--field f--wysiwyg\">\n\n    \n  <div class=\"html-content\">\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\"><a title=\"TIRP\" href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/calis\/tirp\/\" target=\"_self\">Teaching International Relations Program<\/a><\/h4>\n<h3>Attention TIRP Volunteers<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Before the team meets to design the Team Activity Plan (TAP) , <strong>you must visit the Activities Database<\/strong> to select a set of materials to bring to the team planning meeting.<\/li>\n<li>Use the search tag for your TIRP topic to find the <strong>overview guide<\/strong> and review items on the list to pick your recommendations for the 4-week lesson plan.<\/li>\n<li>You have 4 class sessions to accomplish your teaching objectives.\u00a0The goal is to combine one or more analytical tools with cases and activities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Remember!<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Not every database item is \u201can activity\u201d<br \/>\n\u2192 Some items are analytical frames that outline basic terms and relationships.\u00a0These frames are not usually meant to be student handouts.\u00a0They are &#8220;instructor notes&#8221; to guide the main ideas of your lesson planning.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Not every activity is meant for one class session<br \/>\n\u2192 Some activities are only for 20-30 minutes.\u00a0An NPR case is not meant to take a whole class period.\u00a0Cases should be matched with activities.\u00a0Some cases include a built-in activity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/calis\/activities-database\/\">Start with the search tag! <\/a><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>A special tag link for each topic will begin with an overview for TIRP volunteers and include a limited &#8220;core set&#8221; of materials to get you started.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Read the overview carefully.<\/strong> It has condensed notes for you to consider different directions you can take in teaching your four class sessions.<br \/>\nFor example, the topic \u201cpolitical economy\u201d is wide open.\u00a0The tagged set of database items will give different analytical frames that each go in different directions with different cases.<\/li>\n<li>The guide for most materials will refer you to cases and activities that are either intended or recommended to use together.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Reminder!<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Your Advisement Meeting must happen at least one week before your first teaching session.<\/li>\n<li>When the team has its Advisement Meeting, the group is required to bring these items:<br \/>\n\u25a1 <a title=\"TAP form\" href=\"https:\/\/uscdornsife.usc.edu\/dept\/calis\/Selected\/selected_search.cfm?calisid=177\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Team Activity Plan (TAP form)<\/strong><\/a> &#8212; one fully completed form for the team<br \/>\n\u25a1 <strong>Teaching Copies<\/strong> &#8212; all the <strong>guide files<\/strong> of everything listed on your TAP that are <strong>each<\/strong> <strong><em>marked up<\/em><\/strong> with <strong><em>your teaching notes<\/em><\/strong> about what you will emphasize, how long different sections will take, what you will leave out if you run out of time, who will do each section, IR connections, etc.\u00a0 You will use each teaching copy to <strong>show the staff advisor your notes on how the team will coordinate teaching each session with each database item listed on your TAP.<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Warning!<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>At your advisement meeting, a completed TAP form &amp; teaching copies are required.
