{"id":1128,"date":"2023-06-26T08:45:26","date_gmt":"2023-06-26T15:45:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/calis\/?page_id=1128"},"modified":"2025-09-24T14:53:27","modified_gmt":"2025-09-24T21:53:27","slug":"kachigian-tribute","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/calis\/kachigian-tribute\/","title":{"rendered":"An Inspiring Legacy"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n  \n    \n\n\n\n\n\n\n<div\n  class=\"cc--component-container cc--rich-text \"\n\n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  >\n  <div class=\"c--component c--rich-text\"\n    \n      >\n\n    \n      \n<div class=\"f--field f--wysiwyg\">\n\n    \n  <h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">In Recognition of the Kachigian Family Trust<\/h3>\n<h4><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1129 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/calis\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/169\/2023\/06\/Kachigian_Siblings_1050x600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1050\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/calis\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/169\/2023\/06\/Kachigian_Siblings_1050x600.jpg 1050w, https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/calis\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/169\/2023\/06\/Kachigian_Siblings_1050x600-300x171.jpg 300w, https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/calis\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/169\/2023\/06\/Kachigian_Siblings_1050x600-1024x585.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/calis\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/169\/2023\/06\/Kachigian_Siblings_1050x600-768x439.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1050px) 100vw, 1050px\" \/><\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">George, Alice, and Harold Kachigian were the children of<br \/>\nSarkis and Paris Kachigian, survivors of the Armenian genocide.<\/p>\n<p>In 2021, CALIS received a generous gift from the Kachigian family trust, establishing an endowment fund in support of undergraduate outreach in international relations (IR).<\/p>\n<p>Harold Kachigian was an IR major at USC in the late 1950s.\u00a0 He was known for actively engaging with professors in the School of International Relations; a brilliant mind dedicated to making a difference. \u00a0In his honor, CALIS has earmarked the endowment to support undergraduate research assistants (RAs) whose positions include service-learning outreach to local schools.<\/p>\n<p>Dornsife Professors of International Relations, taking on the role of <a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/calis\/staff\/\">CALIS Faculty Advisors<\/a>, select undergraduates who have demonstrated exceptional skills and commitment to academic research.\u00a0 These RAs also participate each semester in the <a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/calis\/service-learning\/\">Teaching International Relations Program\u2014TIRP<\/a> and work on updating and creating TIRP materials.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Since our first round of CALIS RAs in Fall 2021 through Fall 2025, the Kachigian endowment has supported 25 undergraduates \u2014selected as research assistants by six Faculty Advisors.\u00a0 These RAs have been part of team-teaching through TIRP in over 40 classrooms across 11 local high schools.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These integrated RA positions expand opportunities for faculty mentorship, new research, and further support undergrads as the driving force behind CALIS outreach growth and impact.<\/p>\n<p>The blend of research and service-learning reflects USC traditions of engagement and socially relevant scholarship, and sustain the legacy of inquiry and action that Harold Kachigian inspires.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1144 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/calis\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/169\/2023\/06\/Trojan_Debate_Squad_1957_1050x600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1050\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/calis\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/169\/2023\/06\/Trojan_Debate_Squad_1957_1050x600.jpg 1050w, https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/calis\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/169\/2023\/06\/Trojan_Debate_Squad_1957_1050x600-300x171.jpg 300w, https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/calis\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/169\/2023\/06\/Trojan_Debate_Squad_1957_1050x600-1024x585.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/calis\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/169\/2023\/06\/Trojan_Debate_Squad_1957_1050x600-768x439.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1050px) 100vw, 1050px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usctrojandebate.com\/squad\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Trojan Debate Squad (TDS)<\/a>, USC&#8217;s first chartered student organization, is devoted to teaching argumentation and analytic thinking skills to students through academic debate.
