During his fellowship, he has been searching for testimonies that match up in some way with experiences of the characters in the films his students will be watching, including\u00a0<em>2001: A Space Odyssey<\/em>,\u00a0<em>District 9<\/em>, and\u00a0<em>The Matrix<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Sinkoff is teaching a course about exile under Nazism and communism, and wants to focus on Jews\u2019 movement through the region.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m always trying to get students to think about the place and region, because it\u2019s so distant from most Americans,\u201d Sinkoff said. \u201cThe testimonies I\u2019ve already just dipped into are so helpful and illustrative of regional changes and place. What it meant to cross a border, cross a river, the different town names, languages people use. All that comes through in the testimonies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The testimonies Conway has found that he would like to incorporate into his course often center on the theme of dehumanization, of survivors describing how they felt like \u201crobots\u201d or \u201czombies\u201d while they were imprisoned in concentration camps. This theme mirrors his sci-fi films perfectly, he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s the sort of thing I just can\u2019t reproduce for my students,\u201d Conway said. \u201cI\u2018d like them to take in the full effect of the first person testimony.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Conway and Sinkoff each have different ideas for incorporating testimonies into their courses. Conway\u2019s students will each choose a survivor to study and give a report to the class about how he or she relates to one of the films they\u2019ve watched. Sinkoff is thinking about showing clips of different survivors describing the same event, to illustrate how different people viewed the same event from very different perspectives, or even having her students map a survivor\u2019s trajectory through the Holocaust.<\/p>\n<p>They both encourage other professors to explore the Visual History Archive and think creatively about how they can use testimonies in their own courses \u2013 even if the connections aren\u2019t obvious. Sinkoff added that it\u2019s important for professors to adapt to the changing pedagogical landscape, and to embrace new multimedia tools.<\/p>\n<p>They agreed that the testimonies are fascinating, rich, and hard not to be affected by \u2013 and so magnetic that they both found themselves watching hours of a testimony they only meant to watch a few minutes of. They are confident that their students will feel the same way, and be challenged and enlightened by the stories the survivors tell.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur job is to make things complicated, that\u2019s what we do in the classroom,\u201d Sinkoff said. \u201cThe testimonies are so human and people express complexity [in the testimonies] all the time.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n  <\/div><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"","protected":false},"author":140,"featured_media":4646,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[13],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-875","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.1.1 -
