Beginning November 1, 2022, in observance of Native American Heritage Month in the United States, the USC Dornsife Center for Advanced Genocide Research shared at least one video per day from its recent international conference “Mass Violence and Its Lasting Impact on Indigenous Peoples – The Case of the Americas and Australia\/Pacific Region,” which was held at the University of Southern California, on the ancestral and unceded territory of the Tongva and Kizh Nation peoples, from October 22 to October 26, 2022.<\/p>\n

The five-day conference\u00a0brought together over 50 knowledge holders and leading and emerging scholars from around the world \u2013 many of them Indigenous – to discuss groundbreaking research on the topics of genocide against Indigenous peoples in North America, Latin America, Australia, and the Pacific Region; the long-lasting impacts of mass violence on those communities until today; and the resistance, agency, and initiatives of Indigenous peoples to effect change.<\/p>\n

In the intercultural and interdisciplinary dialogue on these subjects across a wide variety of historical, geographic, and cultural contexts, over 30 Indigenous communities were represented, as well as almost 30 different academic disciplines. In addition to the in-person audience of students, faculty, staff, and community members, over 200 people attended the conference on Zoom, participating from Argentina, Australia, Canada, Colombia, Germany, Guatemala, Ireland, Jamaica, Mexico, Peru, the United Kingdom, and the United States. In addition to\u00a0academic discussions, the conference featured community and cultural events, including a film screening and concert.<\/p>\n

The conference videos are available below, as well as on the\u00a0Center’s YouTube channel<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0conference website<\/a>\u00a0that contains more information about the conference presenters, chairs, and honored guests.<\/p>\n

Vel\u00e1squez Nimatuj\u00a0Maya-K\u2019iche\u2019 (Guatemala)<\/em>,\u00a0<\/em>Dorota Glowacka\u00a0(University of King’s College, Halifax, Canada)<\/em>, and\u00a0Wolf Gruner\u00a0(USC Dornsife Center for Advanced Genocide Research)<\/em>.<\/p>\n

The conference was cosponored by\u00a0USC Visions & Voices,\u00a0USC Shoah Foundation,\u00a0USC Center for International Studies,\u00a0USC Native American Student Assembly,\u00a0USC-Huntington Early Modern Studies Institute (EMSI),\u00a0USC Dornsife Office of the Dean Humanities Division,\u00a0Faculty of Arts, Design and Architecture at the University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia,\u00a0Huntington-USC Institute on California and the West (ICW),\u00a0University of King\u2019s College, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada,\u00a0Indigenous Peoples Law and Policy Program at the\u00a0University of Arizona Law,\u00a0USC Department of American Studies and Ethnicity, and the\u00a0USC School of Cinematic Arts.<\/p>\n
