The Tangier International Zone was governed by the Moroccan Mendoub as well as multiple European powers including France, Spain, Great Britain, Italy, the Netherlands, and more. An estimated 1,500 to 2,000 European Jews fled to the strategically significant city during the war.<\/p>\n<p>Living in the Tangier International Zone was a particularly layered experience. Especially notable was the refugees&#8217; coexistence with Spanish soldiers who occupied Tangier in the early 1940s. Bernstien commented on the complexities of living in Tangier as a Jewish refugee in this particular moment, as the reality of Spain\u2019s fascist regimes lay beneath the surface of Spanish occupation and its supposed neutrality. To highlight this point, she shared historical photographs of German officials being greeted by the mayor of Tangier and bystanders holding pro-Hitler and pro-Franco signs.<\/p>\n<p>The latter part of the talk covered her research during her time as a fellow. While at the Center for Advanced Genocide Research, she studied roughly 30 testimonies in the Visual History Archive from survivors who spent time in Tangier during the war. She shared clips of those survivors\u2019 testimonies and their accounts of daily life in Tangier. Some of these interviewees, Bernstein commented, share their own photographs of Tangier in the testimonies.
