Steadman is spending one semester in residence at the Center in Spring 2026 and will present her research publicly during the 2026\u20132027 academic year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During her fellowship, Steadman will examine the relationship between nationalism and genocide through a comparative study of Indigenous ethnocide in Taiwan. Her research investigates how processes of ethnic and cultural erasure &#8211; including language suppression, displacement, and colonial violence &#8211; have shaped nationalist identities within modern states. She will compare the experiences of Indigenous communities in Taiwan with those documented in the Armenian and Guatemalan genocides through analyzing testimonies in the Visual History Archive. Through this comparative approach, she hopes to contribute new perspectives on the relationship between colonialism, genocide, and the formation of modern nationalist identities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Steadman&#8217;s interest in marginalized histories extends beyond this fellowship. She previously received a Salz Polk Fellowship in Comparative Literature to support research on the historical erasure of women composers. She also served as an undergraduate intern with the National Clinic Access Project at the Feminist Majority Foundation, where she conducted research on legal ordinances and anti-abortion extremists. She served as a student researcher at the Annenberg Inclusion Initiative.
