But for others, it wasn\u2019t the first time they would share their story \u2013 or the last.<\/p>\n<p>The practice of some Holocaust survivors sharing their stories many times throughout their lives was the focus of the international conference \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hsozkult.de\/event\/id\/termine-30124\">Bearing Witness More than Once: How Media Institutions, Media and Time Shape Shoah Survivors\u2019 Testimonies<\/a>\u201d at Humboldt University in Berlin, March 16-14.<\/p>\n<p>The conference was organized by USC Shoah Foundation Teaching Fellow\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/cagr\/profiles\/gertrud-pickhan-and-alina-bothe\">Alina Bothe<\/a>. Bothe gave a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/cagr-news\/news\/2016\/03\/11008-teaching-fellow-alina-bothe-discusses-testimony-%E2%80%9Cvirtual-between-memory%E2%80%9D\">lecture<\/a>\u00a0at USC Shoah Foundation Center for Advanced Genocide Research March 1 about her doctoral research on the Institute\u2019s YouTube channel and how the public perceives different testimonies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBearing Witness More than Once\u201d aimed to explore what scholars could learn from Holocaust survivors who gave their testimonies multiple times, specifically Anita Lasker-Wallfisch, Yehuda Bacon and Jolly Zeleny. It was attended by scholars including Jeffrey Shandler, Oren Baruch Stier and Henry Greenspan.<\/p>\n<p>Bothe said the point of the conference was not to compare the survivors\u2019 testimonies or nitpick inconsistencies in their multiple retellings, but to think about how time, media, memory and politics shape a survivor\u2019s narrative. The scholars also debated the ethics of certain survivors having the platform to share their stories many times while others do not.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou learn a lot about testimony when you look at multiple testimonies [of the same survivor],\u201d Bothe said.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"tweet-this\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/intent\/tweet?url=http%3A%2F%2Fow.ly%2F10qdlp&amp;via=uscshoahfdn&amp;text=%22You%20learn%20a%20lot%20about%20testimony%20when%20you%20look%20at%20multiple%20testimonies%20of%20the%20same%20survivor.%22&amp;\">\u201cYou learn a lot about testimony when you look at multiple testimonies of the same survivor.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Bothe said the panel on Anita Lasker-Wallfisch was particularly fascinating. Anita gave her first testimony to the German BBC just five days after the liberation of Auschwitz. She spoke eloquently for three minutes about the crematoria, the experiments, and her fear that no one would believe what happened. Yet, although Bothe said it\u2019s clear how poised and coherent she is, Anita later dismissed the interview as crazy, harsh and shrill.<\/p>\n<p>Another survivor once requested that an old interview he gave be taken down because it was \u201cnot his story any longer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"media-element file-default\" title=\"Alina Bothe\" src=\"https:\/\/sfi.usc.edu\/sites\/default\/files\/bothe_pic.jpg\" alt=\"Alina Bothe\" width=\"550\" height=\"346\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Bothe said the takeaway for the scholars was to respect survivors\u2019 agency and understand that their perceptions of their own stories change over time.<\/p>\n<p>The conference also included a lot of discussion about how ethical it is that some survivors, like Anita, are asked over and over again to share their stories, for books, films, archives, etc., while others are only asked once or not at all. Bothe said the \u201cprofessional survivors\u201d who have devoted much of their lives to speaking publicly often come from more privileged milieu than those who never speak. Scholars might be advised to keep this in mind when they decide which testimonies to include in their research.<\/p>\n<p>While the conference seemed to raise more questions than it answered, Bothe said it was an excellent introduction to the topic of multiple testimonies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis field is very new,\u201d Bothe said. \u201cThe conference was opening up a discussion about these issues.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n  <\/div><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"","protected":false},"author":140,"featured_media":4654,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[12,13,11],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-1177","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-fellows","category-news","category-profiles"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.1.1 -
