Please join us on\u00a0Wednesday February 4th from 4:00 \u2013 6:00 PM at\u00a0Kaprielian Hall (Rm 445)<\/a>\u00a0for\u00a0<\/b>a book talk celebrating Dr. Nic Jon Ramos\u2019 newest monograph\u00a0Health as Property: Racial Capitalism and Sexual Liberalism in Los Angeles.\u00a0<\/span><\/i>Some food and refreshments will be provided.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Health as Property\u00a0<\/i>shows how responses to racism can be predatory, harmful, and dangerous to poor people of color. Forged by the political willingness of white voters to experiment with anti-poverty programs in poor neighborhoods of color, the health system\u2019s multiple missions represented the freedom dreams of civil rights, Black Power, welfare rights, and consumer rights activists in the 1960s and 1970s.\u00a0Health as Property\u00a0<\/i>demonstrates how healthcare policy in America is both labor and real estate policy, and as such preserves health as the property of a select few.<\/p>\n

Nic John Ramos, PhD, is an academic specializing in the history of medicine, race, and sexuality, who earned his PhD in American Studies and Ethnicity from the University of Southern California (USC). He is currently an Assistant Professor of American Studies at the University of Texas at Austin and author of\u00a0Health as Property.\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n

\u201cFrom the Ashes,\u201d imagines a post-volcanic eruption Martinique to think about what it means to conduct anthropological research at the edge of knowledge. A discussion of Christina Cecelia Davidson\u2019s new book, <\/span>Dominican<\/span><\/i> Crossroads<\/span><\/i>: H. C. C. Astwood and the Moral Politics of Race-Making in the Age of Emancipation <\/span><\/i>(Duke UP, 2024). The author will be joined in conversation by Leslie Alexander (Rutgers University) and Millery Polyn\u00e9 (New York University), moderated by Oneka LaBennett (USC). Program partners: the Van Hunnick History Department, Department of American Studies & Ethnicity, and USC Black Studies Initiative<\/span><\/p>\n

About the Book: <\/b>H. C. C. Astwood: minister and missionary, diplomat and politician, enigma in the annals of US history. In <\/span>Dominican<\/span><\/i> Crossroads<\/span><\/i><\/a>, Christina Cecelia Davidson explores Astwood\u2019s extraordinary and complicated life and career. Born in 1844 in the British Caribbean, Astwood later moved to Reconstruction-era New Orleans, where he became a Republican activist and preacher in the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church. In 1882 he became the first Black man named US consul to the <\/span>Dominican<\/span> Republic. Davidson tracks the challenges that Astwood faced as a Black politician in an era of rampant racism and ongoing <\/span>cross<\/span>-border debates over Black men\u2019s capacity for citizenship. As a US representative and AME missionary, Astwood epitomized Black masculine respectability. But as Davidson shows, Astwood became a duplicitous, scheming figure who used deception and engaged in racist moral politics to command authority. His methods, Davidson demonstrates, show a bleaker side of Black international politics and illustrate the varied contours of transnational moral discourse as people of all colors vied for power during the ongoing debate over Black rights in Santo Domingo and beyond. <\/span>MORE<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/div>\n \n <\/div>\n\n\n \n \n \n
