Our priority will be to make both impactful and informed matches, and to ensure mentor and programmatic capacity to include a selected student. You (as the host\/mentor) will be notified and have an opportunity to accept or decline the match\/participation before a student is notified.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">See \u201c<b>What else do I need to know?<\/b>\u201d below:<\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul type=\"circle\">\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul type=\"circle\">\n<li class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">You will be required to complete annual training for the protection of minors\/youth (online).<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"x_MsoNormal\">You will be required to clear a background check through LiveScan (fingerprinting). This is a one-time requirement (not repeated annually), once cleared you should not have to repeat while you remain employed at USC.<\/li>\n<li class=\"x_MsoNormal\">You will be required to have at least one other adult (collaborator or member of your lab) actively co-mentor the student with you [and they must complete the same training and background checks]). This is to adhere to USC\u2019s policy prohibiting private\/one-on-one interactions between an adult and minor\/youth.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n  <\/div><\/div>\n            \n                      <\/div>\n        <\/li>\n\n              <li>\n          <button type=\"button\" class=\"accordion-trigger \" id=\"heading-1-2-shttdHKFMK\" aria-controls=\"section-1-2-shttdHKFMK\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-disabled=\"false\">\n                          <span class=\"item-title\"> What kind of research is eligible for the BUGS Jr program?<\/span>\n            \n                      <\/button>\n\n          <div id=\"section-1-2-shttdHKFMK\" role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"heading-1-2-shttdHKFMK\" class=\"accordion-panel\">\n\n                            \n    \n\n\n\n\n\n\n<div\n  class=\"cc--component-container cc--rich-text \"\n\n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  >\n  <div class=\"c--component c--rich-text\"\n    \n      >\n\n    \n      \n<div class=\"f--field f--wysiwyg\">\n\n    \n  <p>Any research that connects with understanding the human body and human health is eligible. The program culminates in a finale summer symposium at which the students present their research results in a poster session; symposium attendees include faculty\/mentors\/colleagues, as well as fellow students and family members\/guests. We hope you will attend and participate in the symposium too.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n  <\/div><\/div>\n            \n                      <\/div>\n        <\/li>\n\n              <li>\n          <button type=\"button\" class=\"accordion-trigger \" id=\"heading-1-5-shttdHKFMK\" aria-controls=\"section-1-5-shttdHKFMK\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-disabled=\"false\">\n                          <span class=\"item-title\">What are the costs to me (as a faculty\/ mentor) to host a student in the program?<\/span>\n            \n                      <\/button>\n\n          <div id=\"section-1-5-shttdHKFMK\" role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"heading-1-5-shttdHKFMK\" class=\"accordion-panel\">\n\n                            \n    \n\n\n\n\n\n\n<div\n  class=\"cc--component-container cc--rich-text \"\n\n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  >\n  <div class=\"c--component c--rich-text\"\n    \n      >\n\n    \n      \n<div class=\"f--field f--wysiwyg\">\n\n    \n  <p><span data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">All student participants in the BUGS Jr program receive an $800 stipend for their summer work. Faculty will be asked to support this cost from their own research funds; if faculty are unable to support the full cost of the stipend, applications will be reviewed by the BUGS Jr admission committee and a limited number of faculty-student pairs will be selected to receive an award through the Bridge-administered sources of fellowship support for high school students. Any updates or changes to the submitted application should be emailed to\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:bugsprogram@usc.edu\">bugsprogram@usc.edu<\/a>\u00a0and NOT submitted as a new application.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Full acceptance in the BUGS Jr Program is contingent upon:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Satisfactory Completion of the USC General Laboratory Safety Training Course.<\/li>\n<li>Return of completed BUGS Jr Student Contract Forms.<\/li>\n<li>If the student is under 18 years of age, contracts must also be signed by parent\/guardian.<\/li>\n<li>Completion of CampDoc health and registration requirements. This training is available through\u00a0<strong>USC TrojanLearn.\u00a0<\/strong><strong>You will be sent a link when we update our program registration though the Provost\u2019s office.<\/strong><b>.<\/b><\/li>\n<li class=\"x_MsoNormal\">YOU (as \u201cthe\u201d faculty mentor) have a \u201cDuty to Report\u201d knowledge or suspicions of child abuse or neglect. Specific information and instructions are outlined in the faculty contract.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To comply with\u00a0<span style=\"color: #990000;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #990000;\" href=\"https:\/\/casetext.com\/statute\/california-codes\/california-business-and-professions-code\/division-8-special-business-regulations\/chapter-29-youth-service-organizations\/section-18975-child-abuse-and-neglect-prevention#:~:text=Section%2018975%20%2D%20Child%20abuse%20and%20neglect%20prevention%20(a)%20An,child%20abuse%20and%20neglect%20reporting.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-safelink=\"true\" data-linkindex=\"0\">California Bus. &amp; Prof. Code \u00a7 18975<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>(a new state law that went into effect on January 1, 2022), USC\u2019s Protecting Minors policy requires that anyone who will have direct contact with minors in a covered activity undergo a fingerprint-based background check.
