BUGS Jr is not registered or able to sponsor student visas for participation in the summer research program.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">There is\u00a0<b><i>no GPA requirement<\/i><\/b>\u00a0to participate in the BUGS Jr Program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n  <\/div><\/div>\n            \n                      <\/div>\n        <\/li>\n\n              <li>\n          <button type=\"button\" class=\"accordion-trigger \" id=\"heading-1-2-9rpKSb4r7i\" aria-controls=\"section-1-2-9rpKSb4r7i\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-disabled=\"false\">\n                          <span class=\"item-title\"> When is the program offered?<\/span>\n            \n                      <\/button>\n\n          <div id=\"section-1-2-9rpKSb4r7i\" role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"heading-1-2-9rpKSb4r7i\" class=\"accordion-panel\">\n\n                            \n    \n\n\n\n\n\n\n<div\n  class=\"cc--component-container cc--rich-text \"\n\n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  >\n  <div class=\"c--component c--rich-text\"\n    \n      >\n\n    \n      \n<div class=\"f--field f--wysiwyg\">\n\n    \n  <p><span data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">The BUGS Jr program typically runs from mid-June through the first Saturday in August (~7 weeks). The program culminates in a finale summer symposium at which the students present their research results in a poster session; symposium attendees include faculty\/mentors\/colleagues, as well as fellow students and family members\/guests. Any questions or concerns you have for the health and safety of your child should be communicated to us at <a href=\"mailto:bugsprogram@usc.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"0\">bugsprogram@usc.edu<\/a>\u00a0or 213-821-9823.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Relevant details about USC\u2019s Working with Minors Policies<\/strong>\u00a0(<a href=\"https:\/\/policy.usc.edu\/protecting-minors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/policy.usc.edu\/protecting-minors\/<\/a>)\u00a0<strong>include:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Because all one-on-one interactions between a Covered Activity (BUGS Jr Program) Staff person and a Minor must be observable and interruptible by another Covered Activity Staff member (except under emergency circumstances), our faculty are required to identify at least one additional lab member (faculty, staff, postdoc, or grad student) to participate with them in the research activities with the student for the duration of the summer program.<\/li>\n<li>Faculty mentors and their lab members who are working with the child\/minor complete a background check before the student is notified of acceptance in the program.<\/li>\n<li>Faculty mentors and their lab members who are working with the child\/minor (&lt;18 year old) must complete (annual) USC mandated training for interacting with minors and reporting suspected child abuse or neglect and provide their training certificate to the Bridge Institute staff.<\/li>\n<li>Faculty mentors have a \u201cDuty to Report\u201d knowledge or suspicions of child abuse or neglect.<\/li>\n<li>USC has implemented a fingerprinting requirement for part of its background check process for all adults participating in Youth\/Minor program activities. Potential students will no longer be responsible for finding a faculty mentor that will accept them prior to applying. In their application, students will be required to provide BRIEF narratives info about their research interests, experiences, and goals. If they have participated previously or had previous correspondence with a faculty member, they should include that information in response to the application question \u201cIs there anything else you\u2019d like us to know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Potential faculty mentors will be required to pre-register for the 2025 BUGS Jr program, agreeing to the various trainings, as well as supervisory and funding requirements. These standards have been established to help maintain a supportive, engaging, safe, and meaningful experience for all, and are intended to operate in conjunction with the guidelines, rules and regulations of the specific camp, program, activity or event in which youth participants are taking part.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Participant expectations:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Be courteous and considerate, and always interact with others respectfully<\/li>\n<li>Practice good citizenship, open-mindedness, and always treat others with kindness<\/li>\n<li>Use appropriate language at all times, and be thoughtful in what you say, post, share, or comment in any online platforms<\/li>\n<li>Practice leadership and encourage fellow participants to conduct themselves appropriately and with integrity<\/li>\n<li>Be responsible for your own behavior; uphold high standards for self and accept consequences for inappropriate behavior<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Behaviors that are not permitted include, but are not limited to, the following:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Any actions that bully, tease, dominate, or display sexualized behavior towards another<\/li>\n<li>Disrespecting others, crossing personal boundaries, or exhibiting unethical or immoral conduct<\/li>\n<li>Use of inappropriate language, including profanity, slurs, insults or anything other language that could be hurtful or harmful to another person<\/li>\n<li>Possession or consumption of alcohol and illegal drugs, including the use of tobacco by a minor<\/li>\n<li>Possession or use of harmful objects with the intent to harm or intimidate others (e.g., weapons, fireworks, etc.)<\/li>\n<li>Using cameras, videos, or any other type of recording devices in private areas, such as bathrooms, changing\/locker rooms, or shower facilities<\/li>\n<li>Being in spaces that are not permitted or off-limits, such as unsupervised or unauthorized spaces, etc.<\/li>\n<li>Destruction or theft of property<\/li>\n<li>Other conduct determined to be inappropriate for youth development<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Violations of the standards of behavior will be handled as follows:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If a chaperone is present for the minor involved in the violation, this person will be made aware of the violation.<\/li>\n<li>If necessary, arrangements will be made to remove the minor from the activity or program.<\/li>\n<li>The parent\/guardian will be notified of the incident and actions that have been and\/or will be taken.<\/li>\n<li>The minor can\/may be barred from participating in future USC activities and programs with minor participants.<\/li>\n<li>When warranted (e.g., violation of law) the situation may be turned over to the appropriate external agency (e.g., law enforcement authority).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n  <\/div><\/div>\n            \n                      <\/div>\n        <\/li>\n\n          <\/ul>\n  \n      <div class=\"links-container\">\n      \n
