\n Dr. Sarah Gualtieri receives the Mary C. Turpie Award at the American Studies Association\n <\/h3>\n\n\n<\/div>\n \n \n
\n\n \n

Professor Sarah Gualtieri is the recipient of the 2024 Mary C. Turpie Award<\/a>, which honors scholars whose work transforms American Studies through local and regional engagement. Prof. Gualtieri is recognized for her pioneering leadership in establishing Southwest Asia and North Africa (SWANA) Studies at USC, addressing Arab racial formation, U.S. imperialism, and settler colonialism. Her scholarship, mentorship, and program-building have expanded the boundaries of American Studies, fostering innovative initiatives across institutions. We extend our deepest congratulations to Prof. Gualtieri on this well-deserved honor.<\/p>\n

\n USC proudly honors Dr. Nayan Shah with a Phi Kappa Phi Faculty Recognition Award\n <\/h3>\n\n\n<\/div>\n \n \n

In April 2024, Dr. Nayan Shah received the\u00a0Phi Kappa Phi Faculty Recognition Award\u00a0for\u00a0\u00a0his book Refusal to Eat: A Century of Prison Hunger Strikes (University of California Press 2022). \u00a0The book is the first global history of hunger strikes as a tactic in prisons and protest movements. An acclaimed author, Professor\u00a0Shah\u00a0reminds the reader of fundamental questions surrounding punishment, protest, and free speech, while preserving the spirit of compassion that weaves throughout his work.<\/p>\n

For his moral courage and clarity of vision as a historian, and for his commitment to understanding the ways that oppressed individuals make their voices heard, the University of Southern California proudly honored Nayan Shah with a Phi Kappa Phi Faculty Recognition Award.<\/p>\n

Professor Tongson received the \u201c2023 Communicator of the Year Award\u201d in the Humanities. The award honors scholars who contribute significant time and effort to meaningfully improve the public\u2019s understanding of issues, influence policy, and\/or raise the level of public discourse around research and scholarship conducted at Dornsife.<\/p>\n

Professor LaBennett received the \u201c2023 USC Dornsife Dean\u2019s Emblem Award for Outstanding Scholarship in the space of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.<\/p>\n

The award honors scholars for publications, research, or engagement with the public or academic community that address issues of access, representational diversity, the impact of marginalization or discrimination, and\/or building inclusive communities.<\/p>\n

We are honored to celebrate our colleague Professor Francille Rusan Wilson\u2019s receipt of the Carter Godwin Woodson Scholars Medallion from the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH.) This award, as the ASALH website states,\u00a0\u201cis presented to a scholar whose career is distinguished through at least a decade of research, writing, and activism in the field of African American life and history. The recipient\u2019s career should embody and personify the Woodson legacy to ensure a firm foundation for the continuance of African-centered education through dedication and commitment to African-American history.\u201d More details can be found here:\u00a0https:\/\/asalh.org\/awards\/woodson-scholars-medallion\/<\/a>. Evelyn Alsultany<\/strong>\u00a0is a leading expert on the history of representations of Arabs and Muslims in the U.S. media and on forms of anti-Arab and anti-Muslim racism.\u00a0Alsultany is the author of\u00a0Arabs and Muslims in the Media: Race and Representation after 9\/1<\/i>1\u00a0(New York University Press, 2012) and co-editor of\u00a0Arab and Arab American Feminisms: Gender, Violence, and Belonging<\/i>\u00a0(Syracuse University Press, 2011) and\u00a0Between the Middle East and the Americas: The Cultural Politics of Diaspora<\/i>\u00a0(University of Michigan Press, 2013).<\/p>\n

Adrian De Leon<\/strong>\u00a0is a Abagatan (Southern) Ilokano poet, historian, and essayist. His research and creative practice explore Philippine indigeneity and migrant labor from the 19th<\/sup>\u00a0century to World War II. He is the author of\u00a0Rouge<\/i>\u00a0(2018) and\u00a0barangay<\/i>\u00a0(forthcoming, 2021), and co-editor of\u00a0FEEL WAYS: A Scarborough Anthology<\/i>\u00a0(2020). He is an Assistant Professor of American Studies & Ethnicity at the University of Southern California, and a faculty member of the Center for Transpacific Studies.<\/p>\n

Oneka LaBennett<\/strong>\u00a0(Ph.D. Harvard, Social Anthropology, 2002) is the author of\u00a0She’s Mad Real: Popular Culture and West Indian Girls in Brooklyn,\u00a0<\/i>and editor of\u00a0Racial Formation in the Twenty-First Century<\/i>. Her recent article, \u201c\u2018Beyonc\u00e9 and Her Husband\u2019: Infidelity and Kinship in a Black Marriage,” appears in a special issue of\u00a0differences:\u00a0A Journal of Feminist Cultural Studies<\/i>. Her current projects include one manuscript that situates Guyana\u2019s marginality in scholarly discourses against its centrality in global, gendered racializations; and another that examines genre-defying Black women artists. Previously, LaBennett was Associate Professor and Director of Graduate Studies for Cornell University\u2019s Africana Studies and Research Center.<\/p>\n

Shawn McDaniel<\/strong>\u00a0(Ph.D. The Graduate Center, CUNY) is Assistant Professor of American Studies and Ethnicity. Prior to joining USC, he was Assistant Professor of Romance Studies and Latina\/o Studies and the Emerson-Krapels Faculty Fellow at Cornell University. Intersecting Caribbean, Latin American, and Latinx literary and cultural studies, his research and pedagogy explore subjectivity, power, aesthetics, modernism, race, gender, sexuality, and dissidence in print, visual, and sonic cultures of the Americas from the nineteenth century to the present. He is working on two book projects:\u00a0Centenary Subjects: Race, Reason, and Rupture in the Americas<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0Cuban Chic: Queer Deco and Diasporic Modernism<\/i>\u00a0in New York and Havana<\/i>.<\/p>\n

Natalia Molina<\/strong>\u2019s work lies at the intersections of race, gender, culture, and citizenship. She is the author of two award-winning books,\u00a0Fit to be Citizens? Public Health and Race in Los Angeles, 1879\u20131939<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0How Race Is Made in America: Immigration, Citizenship, and the Historical Power of Racial Scripts<\/i>. Her current book project examines eight decades of place-making, community formation, and gentrification in the historically multiethnic Los Angeles community of Echo Park.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n <\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

We are pleased to share the news that Nayan Shah\u2019s recent book\u00a0Stranger Intimacy: Contesting Race, Sexuality, and\u00a0Law in the North American West<\/em>\u00a0has been awarded the American Historical Association, Pacific Coast Branch\u2019s\u00a0Norris and Carol Hundley Award.\u00a0 The Hundley Award recognizes the most distinguished\u00a0book on any historical subject submitted by a scholar who resides\u00a0within the\u00a0twenty-two Western states or four Canadian provinces from which the Pacific Branch\u00a0of the American Historical Association\u00a0draws its membership. \u00a0The award will be presented on Saturday August 11 at the conference banquet at\u00a0Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice at the University of San Diego.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/div>\n \n <\/div>\n\n\n \n \n \n
