Turpie Award at the American Studies Association\n      <\/h3>\n\n\n<\/div>\n                        \n                                                        \n<div class=\"f--field f--description\">\n\n    \n  <p>Professor Sarah Gualtieri is the recipient of the 2024 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theasa.net\/awards\/asa-awards-prizes\/mary-c-turpie-prize\">Mary C. Turpie Award<\/a>, which honors scholars whose work transforms American Studies through local and regional engagement. Prof. Gualtieri is recognized for her pioneering leadership in establishing Southwest Asia and North Africa (SWANA) Studies at USC, addressing Arab racial formation, U.S. imperialism, and settler colonialism. Her scholarship, mentorship, and program-building have expanded the boundaries of American Studies, fostering innovative initiatives across institutions. His research and creative practice explore Philippine indigeneity and migrant labor from the 19<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0century to World War II. He is the author of\u00a0<i>Rouge<\/i>\u00a0(2018) and\u00a0<i>barangay<\/i>\u00a0(forthcoming, 2021), and co-editor of\u00a0<i>FEEL WAYS: A Scarborough Anthology<\/i>\u00a0(2020). He is an Assistant Professor of American Studies &amp; Ethnicity at the University of Southern California, and a faculty member of the Center for Transpacific Studies.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Oneka LaBennett<\/strong>\u00a0(Ph.D. Harvard, Social Anthropology, 2002) is the author of\u00a0<i>She&#8217;s Mad Real: Popular Culture and West Indian Girls in Brooklyn,\u00a0<\/i>and editor of\u00a0<i>Racial Formation in the Twenty-First Century<\/i>. Her recent article, \u201c\u2018Beyonc\u00e9 and Her Husband\u2019: Infidelity and Kinship in a Black Marriage,&#8221; appears in a special issue of\u00a0<i>differences:\u00a0A Journal of Feminist Cultural Studies<\/i>. Her current projects include one manuscript that situates Guyana\u2019s marginality in scholarly discourses against its centrality in global, gendered racializations; and another that examines genre-defying Black women artists. Previously, LaBennett was Associate Professor and Director of Graduate Studies for Cornell University\u2019s Africana Studies and Research Center.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Shawn McDaniel<\/strong>\u00a0(Ph.D. The Graduate Center, CUNY) is Assistant Professor of American Studies and Ethnicity. Prior to joining USC, he was Assistant Professor of Romance Studies and Latina\/o Studies and the Emerson-Krapels Faculty Fellow at Cornell University. Intersecting Caribbean, Latin American, and Latinx literary and cultural studies, his research and pedagogy explore subjectivity, power, aesthetics, modernism, race, gender, sexuality, and dissidence in print, visual, and sonic cultures of the Americas from the nineteenth century to the present. He is working on two book projects:\u00a0<i>Centenary Subjects: Race, Reason, and Rupture in the Americas<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<i>Cuban Chic: Queer Deco and Diasporic Modernism<\/i>\u00a0<i>in New York and Havana<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Natalia Molina<\/strong>\u2019s work lies at the intersections of race, gender, culture, and citizenship. She is the author of two award-winning books,\u00a0<i>Fit to be Citizens? Public Health and Race in Los Angeles, 1879\u20131939<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<i>How Race Is Made in America: Immigration, Citizenship, and the Historical Power of Racial Scripts<\/i>. Her current book project examines eight decades of place-making, community formation, and gentrification in the historically multiethnic Los Angeles community of Echo Park.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n Sexuality, and\u00a0Law in the North American West<\/em>\u00a0has been awarded the American Historical Association, Pacific Coast Branch\u2019s\u00a0Norris and Carol Hundley Award.\u00a0 The Hundley Award recognizes the most distinguished\u00a0book on any historical subject submitted by a scholar who resides\u00a0within the\u00a0twenty-two Western states or four Canadian provinces from which the Pacific Branch\u00a0of the American Historical Association\u00a0draws its membership. \u00a0The award will be presented on Saturday August 11 at the conference banquet at\u00a0Joan B.
