src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/v0qa6BQ9m0o?si=NfWXRvO2UOIMMARR\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>2023 has been a pivotal year, both for the Armenian world and for <span class=\"outlook-search-highlight\" data-markjs=\"true\">our<\/span> Institute, which focuses on examining the contemporary Armenian experience. We witnessed the complete ethnic cleansing of Armenians <span class=\"outlook-search-highlight\" data-markjs=\"true\">from<\/span> the Armenian homeland of Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh), after an illegal blockade that brought the population to the brink of famine. In the face of warnings and expert opinions that a \u201cgenocide by starvation\u201d was unfolding, the international order stood by\u00a0in silence or with hollow words as a democratic state was forced to dismantle under gunpoint. On <span class=\"outlook-search-highlight\" data-markjs=\"true\">our<\/span> very own campus, the USC Annenberg School hosted the Turkish Ambassador, at the same time as Armenians were being emptied out of Artsakh with Turkish support.<\/p>\n<p>I never imagined that in my first year as <span class=\"outlook-search-highlight\" data-markjs=\"true\">director<\/span> I would need to write an op-ed about the role of disinformation and Armenophobia in the ethnic cleansing of my kin, or newsletters with res<span class=\"outlook-search-highlight\" data-markjs=\"true\">our<\/span>ces for other academics on the catastrophic situation in Artsakh, or letters of protest to my own university administration about sacrificing historical truth in the name of freedom of speech. I\u2019ve learned quickly that educating up, across, and down are all parts of the job.<\/p>\n<p>2023 was a year of transition and transformation at the Institute as I took <span class=\"outlook-search-highlight\" data-markjs=\"true\">director<\/span>ship in January. I had anticipated an intentionally quiet year &#8211; one dedicated to deep thinking, thoughtful discovery, and extensive reflection. My goal was to craft a new vision and mission for the Institute to amplify its activities and impact. The catastrophic developments in Artsakh devastated me, my entire team, and the Armenian world at large. They also crystallized why we exist as a research institute, and the urgency and relevance of <span class=\"outlook-search-highlight\" data-markjs=\"true\">our<\/span> work.<\/p>\n<p>In the midst of unprecedented challenges, the Institute\u2019s research, activities, and programming continued at full force. I am proud to share some of the highlights of <span class=\"outlook-search-highlight\" data-markjs=\"true\">our<\/span> work.<\/p>\n<p>In 2023, the Institute:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Hosted, cosponsored, and participated as speakers, panelists, and experts at more than <strong>70<\/strong> conferences, lectures, seminars, and workshops<\/li>\n<li>Expanded its oral history archives with <strong>140<\/strong> new interviews capturing Armenian life stories &#8211; that\u2019s more than <strong>420<\/strong> h<span class=\"outlook-search-highlight\" data-markjs=\"true\">our<\/span>s of recorded footage<\/li>\n<li>Presented original research at <strong>17<\/strong> academic conferences across North America, Armenia, and Brazil<\/li>\n<li>Held <strong>6<\/strong> capacity-building academic workshops at the USC Tacori Center in Armenia<\/li>\n<li>Published <strong>original research<\/strong> in peer-reviewed publications on the contemporary Armenian experience<\/li>\n<li>Amassed more than <strong>13,000<\/strong> podcast downloads and increased <span class=\"outlook-search-highlight\" data-markjs=\"true\">our<\/span> social media presence with <strong>361,000<\/strong> views on Instagram alone<\/li>\n<li>Focused on <span class=\"outlook-search-highlight\" data-markjs=\"true\">our<\/span> students by co-sponsoring <strong>12<\/strong> events with the Armenian Students\u2019 Association, granting scholarships, and advising on several student research projects<\/li>\n<li>Engaged more than a dozen <strong>USC student workers<\/strong> by giving them the opportunity to work with and create primary s<span class=\"outlook-search-highlight\" data-markjs=\"true\">our<\/span>ce materials, develop real-world skills, and become part of the research community at the universityOf c<span class=\"outlook-search-highlight\" data-markjs=\"true\">our<\/span>se, not all <span class=\"outlook-search-highlight\" data-markjs=\"true\">our<\/span> work can be quantified \u2013 <span class=\"outlook-search-highlight\" data-markjs=\"true\">our<\/span> daily activities, partnerships, collaborations, mentorships, and impact on students cannot be captured in numbers.
