This fall the Institute welcomes Professor <\/span>Khachig T\u00f6l\u00f6lyan, one of the founding architects of modern diaspora studies, as its second Seminal Scholar-in-Residence.<\/p>\n

Across a career spanning five decades, Professor T\u00f6l\u00f6lyan transformed diaspora into a major interdisciplinary field, developing influential frameworks for understanding dispersion, migration, statelessness, transnationalism, homeland relations, and belonging. As the founder and longtime editor of Diaspora: A Journal of Transnational Studies<\/em>, he created a vital forum for the emerging field, while his landmark scholarship challenged nation-state-centered approaches to identity and political belonging. Deeply informed by the Armenian experience, his work demonstrates how Armenian Studies can generate ideas of broad global significance\u2014an intellectual legacy he will share at USC through lectures, workshops, and public conversations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/div>\n \n \n

The Institute offers students from all majors and backgrounds the opportunity to enroll in two interdisciplinary courses, MDA 330 and MDA 333, which focus on Armenian topics from global and diverse perspectives. \n It Takes a Diaspora to Raise a Language: Future Directions for Armenian\n <\/h2>\n\n\n<\/div>\n \n \n

The USC Dornsife Institute of Armenian Studies, in partnership with the Armenian Communities Department of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, hosted It Takes a Diaspora to Raise a Language: Future Directions for Armenian<\/em>, an interdisciplinary conference exploring the evolving role of the Armenian language in diasporic and global contexts. Bringing together scholars, educators, and community practitioners, the conference took place on February 27\u2013March 1, 2026, at the University of Southern California\u2019s Taper Hall of Humanities in Los Angeles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/div>\n \n \n

\n Collective Voices, Zine Dedicated to Artsakh\n <\/h2>\n\n\n<\/div>\n \n \n

The USD Dornsife Institute of Armenian Studies publishes Collective Voices<\/i>, a zine featuring original writing and art about Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh). An experimental magazine, or \u201czine,\u201d is a print media format that affords creativity in both content and presentation, unbound from traditional publishing structures.<\/p>\n

The project originated at Artsakh Uprooted: Aftermaths of Displacement<\/i>, the Institute\u2019s multidisciplinary symposium in November 2024. In the spirit of that groundbreaking program, Collective Voices<\/i> harnesses cultural production to amplify Armenian stories and experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/div>\n \n \n
