\nwheels away from USC jn
\nthe morn, his sandals meld
\nwith the pedals, this street
\nrolls his bicycle, steel shines on spokes.
\nBearded Alik, in search of nude beaches,
\nDown to the sea, except it\u2019s not down
\nbut sraight, the hills in the distance
\nalready hazy in the purple-brown
\ntranslucence of photochemical smog.
\nThe sun is warm on his back, dyeing
\naway Ithaca winters. Alik
\nin unrainy Southern California
\nand he doesn\u2019t drive.<\/p>\n

Cycle on, Pasternakian friend.
\nCycle on, Alik, only thirty miles to the nearest beach.
\nThey say the sands of Venice are pearky
\nand auburn girls crowd fabled Malibu.
\nIf you long to see the surf of sainted Monica
\ndo not be deterred, Alik
\nby the tar pits of La Brea
\nthe muffler shops of Sepulveda Blvd.
\nStop at the Church of the Spirit of Holy Monetarism,
\ndetour for a semiotic analysis of El Segundo\u2019s taco shop signs.
\nThere is no Penelope waiting at home…<\/p>\n

Oh, Alik, have the Angeleno lotus-eaters
\nsated you with their buckthorn weed?
\nBuy yourself some chaps, wuth deerskin
\ngfringes to blow in the wind as you ride, and
\ncome home, Alik<\/p>\n
