Welcome!
The Wrigley Institute for Environmental Studies (WIES) is USC's hub for environmental research, education and outreach. Wrigley Institute-affiliated faculty conduct research in all aspects of the environment, such as the biological adaptations to climate change, interactions among humans and natural systems, and the analysis and development of environmental policy. WIES also manages the USC research laboratories and conference facilities on Catalina Island, and works with foundations and the public to enhance environmental awareness. Get involved!
Transportation to the USC Wrigley Marine Science Center on Catalina Island
The USC Wrigley Institute provides regular transportation between the mainland and the USC facilities on Catalina Island near Two Harbors. The USC vessel Miss Christi carries up to 45 passengers from San Pedro to Catalina Island, Monday through Friday. For more about this service, see the transportation link in the section about the Philip K. Wrigley Marine Science Center. For information about the USC boat schedule, check the transportation section of the online calendar for the Wrigley Marine Science Center.
USC Student Transportation to Catalina Island
Boat transportation to the USC Wrigley Marine Science Center on Catalina Island runs from Monday through Friday to accommodate faculty, staff and students who are engaged in classes and research projects there. Limited space is available for other USC students to make daytrips to the island on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
Please note:
- The USC boat service to Catalina Island does not go to the tourist community of Avalon. It runs between the mainland at San Pedro and the USC lab at Two Harbors, which is more than 10 miles by water (and more than 20 miles by road) from Avalon.
- This arrangement for USC student travel on Tuesdays and on Wednesdays is limited to 10 spaces on a first-come, first-served basis. Also, this USC boat service is available only for one-day round trips. (The return trip to the mainland must be made on the same day as the morning trip to Catalina Island.)
Details about the USC boat transportation are available at this link.

Students enrolled at USC can learn more about programs at the Wrigley Marine Science Center and transportation there by sending email to Ann Close, Wrigley Institute Director of Education.
