The Wrigley Institute seeks to build upon our considerable assets to develop a robust program in Coastal Sustainability—one that enhances expertise in coastal and oceanic resources, and merges this strength with knowledge of cityscapes and watersheds. This program will require the addition of faculty in key critical areas and the forging of stronger connections among existing departments. The Wrigley Institute also seeks to construct new infrastructure to modernize and prepare the research campus for a sustainable future. This includes a Center for Environmental Understanding, a new building dedicated to education and collaboration at the Wrigley Marine Science Center on Catalina Island, and to increase the institute’s profile by more direct engagement with the public. Director’s Priorities related to Strategic Plan
Support a diverse array of institute-level initiatives and programs through the Director’s Fund, giving the institute maximum flexibility to build creatively and respond to opportunities as they arise.

Endowment gifts are vital legacies that provide permanent and lasting support. These gifts—often named for donors, families, or in memoriam—are strategically invested and the Wrigley Institute uses the investment gains to support the endowment goal. Examples of endowments include chairs or professorships to honor scholarly excellence in our faculty, early career chairs to recruit and support young faculty with great promise, student scholarships/fellowships, lectureships, research centers and seminar series.

Increasing the endowment is a high priority of the USC Wrigley Institute’s Strategic Plan. In particular, the institute seeks support for:

  • An endowed faculty chair in Ocean Fisheries and Food Webs
  • An endowed faculty chair in Ocean Observations and Technology
  • A faculty scholar in terrestrial and built ecosystems
  • A faculty scholar in terrestrial/watershed biogeochemistry
  • A new Center for Environmental Understanding: a building dedicated to education and collaboration at the Wrigley Marine Science Center on Catalina Island
  • An endowed distinguished lecture and panel discussion series, to raise environmental awareness and forge interdisciplinary relationships across campus
  • Endowed annual training fellowships and scholarships for undergraduate, graduate or postdoctoral scholars in interdisciplinary areas such as science communication or sustainability research
