Macarena Gomez-Barris' research interests focus on memory, culture, and power. Her book Where Memory Dwells: Culture and State Violence in Chile, examines the memory politics of representation and culture in the aftermath of Chile's dictatorship (UC Press 2009). She co-edited a volume that provides methodological and epistemological guidance for a reconstructed Sociology, entitled Towards a Sociology of the Trace (Minneapolis: University of Minnesota, 2010). Her current research is on religious tourism in Cusco, Peru and Jerusalem.
