Assemblyman Anthony Portantino

Anthony Portantino served in the California State Assembly from December, 2006 to December 2012. Upon taking office, he quickly established himself as a passionate supporter of education and an independent leader who endeavored to put policy ahead of politics. He has been an outspoken champion for government reform, fiscal responsibility, accountability and transparency.

Senator Tony Strickland

Tony is a husband of 15 years to his wife, Audra, and a father to two children—Ruby Ruth and Anthony Paul.

As a member of the California State Senate, Senator Strickland’s top priority was growing California’s economy. He believes the best way to preserve funding for vital programs like healthcare, education, and transportation is by creating jobs.

Daily Trojan: Politicians discuss climate change

The Jesse M. Unruh Institute of Politics, Political Student Assembly, Environmental Student Assembly and Political Science Undergraduate Association hosted “California Politics Roundtable Discussion” Wednesday night. The theme of this discussion  was “California’s Environmental Challenges and Opportunities,” to coincide with Earth Month, which occurs every April.

Daily Trojan: Unruh Institute discusses state politics

The Jesse M. Unruh Institute of Politics, Political Student Assembly and Political Science Undergraduate Association partnered to present the second “California Politics Roundtable Discussion” Wednesday evening. The conversation featured USC’s two legislators in residence: former State Senator Tony Strickland and former Assemblyman Anthony Portantino. Portantino, who also teaches a class at USC, has been interacting and mentoring students since he and Strickland began the program last year.

Daily Trojan: Sacramento hosts USC

Twenty-eight USC students attended the three-day Joseph R. Cerrell Sacramento Seminar in Political Leadership over the weekend. The seminar selected attendees from a competitive pool of applicants and took selected students on a three-day trip to California’s capital city to meet and learn from some of the state’s most prominent leaders.

Daily Trojan: PSA discusses California political policy

The Political Student Assembly and the Jesse M. Unruh Institute of Politics hosted a discussion focusing on Gov. Jerry Brown’s State of the State address, as well as the future of California policy. Former California State Sen. Tony Strickland and former Assemblymember Anthony Portantino were in attendance, and praised Gov. Brown for his pragmatism in dealing with the state’s budget and other issues.

Daily Trojan: Unruh holds panel

In the first “Students Talk Back” event of the semester, Californian office members and Democratic and Republican students discussed President Barack Obama’s 2014 State of the Union address. The event, entitled “Students Talk Back: A Politics and Public Policy Forum,” featured a panel consisting of former California Assemblymember of the 44th district Anthony Portantino, former California Senator serving the 19th district Tony Strickland, Vice President of the USC College Democrats Shikhar Gupta and President of the USC College Republicans Jennifer Massey.
