Assemblyman Anthony Portantino, USC Adjunct Professor

Anthony Portantino served in the California State Assembly from December, 2006 to December 2012. Upon taking office, he quickly established himself as a passionate supporter of education and an independent leader who endeavored to put policy ahead of politics. He has been an outspoken champion for government reform, fiscal responsibility, accountability and transparency.

Daily Trojan: Politicians discuss climate change

The Jesse M. Unruh Institute of Politics, Political Student Assembly, Environmental Student Assembly and Political Science Undergraduate Association hosted “California Politics Roundtable Discussion” Wednesday night. The theme of this discussion  was “California’s Environmental Challenges and Opportunities,” to coincide with Earth Month, which occurs every April.

Daily Trojan: Unruh Institute discusses state politics

The Jesse M. Unruh Institute of Politics, Political Student Assembly and Political Science Undergraduate Association partnered to present the second “California Politics Roundtable Discussion” Wednesday evening. The conversation featured USC’s two legislators in residence: former State Senator Tony Strickland and former Assemblyman Anthony Portantino. Portantino, who also teaches a class at USC, has been interacting and mentoring students since he and Strickland began the program last year.

Daily Trojan: Sacramento hosts USC

Twenty-eight USC students attended the three-day Joseph R. Cerrell Sacramento Seminar in Political Leadership over the weekend. The seminar selected attendees from a competitive pool of applicants and took selected students on a three-day trip to California’s capital city to meet and learn from some of the state’s most prominent leaders.

Daily Trojan: PSA discusses California political policy

The Political Student Assembly and the Jesse M. Unruh Institute of Politics hosted a discussion focusing on Gov. Jerry Brown’s State of the State address, as well as the future of California policy. Former California State Sen. Tony Strickland and former Assemblymember Anthony Portantino were in attendance, and praised Gov. Brown for his pragmatism in dealing with the state’s budget and other issues.

With the start of the new school year, the USC Dornsife Unruh Institute of Politics has also launched a new program called “Legislators in Residence,” which features former State Senator Tony Strickland and former State Assemblyman Anthony Portantino as on-campus student mentors.
