Transformations of Life (2011-2012)
Transformations of life: the human sciences from the early modern to the molecular age. Rapidly developing fields such as neuroscience and molecular biology promise to upend existing understandings of life and selfhood. Indeed, they have begun to interact with disciplines such as economics and psychology to propose new understandings of the sources of human action. The activities of the Research Cluster will bring historians and comparative analysts of the human sciences into conversation with life scientists in order to contextualize these developments: how do they compare with earlier epochs in which there were apparently revolutionary new understandings of the human – whether in the Enlightenment or at the dawn of the Freudian unconscious?
