USC Spectrum Speaker Series

USC Dornsife, in collaboration with Student Affairs, brings speakers and debates to the campus on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings.  These events enrich the academic culture of the University beyond the hours of 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., when classes are usually held.  They are open to all members of the University community.

Past speakers have included Robert Bellah, Julian Bond, David Corn, Jared Diamond, Harlan Ellison, Murray Gell-Mann, John Guare, Maxine Hong Kingston, Tony Kushner, Larry Lessig, Maya Lin, Amory Lovins, Richard Lowry, Dee Dee Myers, Elaine Pagels, Ramona Ripston, William Safire, George Stephanopoulos, Antonio Villaraigosa, and Robert Winter.

Students enrolled in a Social Issues General Education class and an affiliated section of Writing and Critical Reasoning attend two events during the semester, creating a broad intellectual community of undergraduates, graduates, and faculty, with some common academic experiences.  At the same time, the talks allow students to apply the skills they are learning in one context to other arenas of social analysis.
