MISSION STATEMENTThe Department of Spanish and Portuguese has several missions involving teaching and scholarship. Its Spanish Language Program accommodates the largest number of students of any foreign language taught at USC, and includes the possibility of voluntary participation by students of Spanish both in JEP (Joint Educational Project), and in opportunities for activities on the Internet. The undergraduate Spanish major and minor programs attract large numbers of students from throughout the University, and are balanced programs consisting of coursework in the areas of Hispanic language, literature and culture. During the summer the Department offers programs in Spain and Latin America. These programs combine intensive courses in Spanish language, literature and culture with cultural activities such as visits to museums and historical sites. Special courses taught in these programs are applicable towards the major or minor in Spanish. Through the Office of Overseas Studies, students of Spanish are encouraged to study for a semester or a year at various affiliated universities in Spain, Mexico, Costa Rica, Peru, Chile, Argentina and Brazil.
