Roger D. Stewart

Executive Associate Dean for Administration and Finance

Roger D. Stewart is the Chief Financial and Administrative Officer for Dornsife and coordinates operations within the Office of the Dean, which include faculty affairs and research advancement, diversity, academic programs, and student affairs.

Stewart provides oversight for information technology, particularly administrative computing and management information systems.  He coordinates development and documentation of college policies and procedures and leads the  Senior Administrative Staff  group, comprised of 78 staff from all of the College's departments and centers.   He works with Dornsife Communication in the areas of web development and internal communications.  He is Co-Director of the College's Emergency Response and Business Continuity Team.

Stewart's accomplishments over several College administrations include the following:

He created the first comprehensive academic and financial planning process while overseeing the former Division of Humanities.  This process (known as "Schedule and Staffing") was later adopted by all departments.  It incorporates all of the curricular, faculty load, and teaching assistant information needed to formulate a budget plan for the following academic year.  It has been elaborated over many iterations, moving from spreadsheets to a sophisticated database application.

While serving as Associate Dean of Faculty Stewart created the College's first database for faculty records.  This provided important management information and tools that were not availble through university systems at the time.  He subsequently helped design and implement a searchable scanned document repository for all records.

While serving as Senior Associate Dean for Joseph Aoun, Stewart was instrumental in two key developments for the College.  The first was the creation of the first Public Relations office (later renamed Communication).  During its early days, Stewart co-directed a major overhaul of the College's public web.  Several years later, he served as Interim Director while a national search for a permanent replacement was conducted.  During this time, he was editor in chief of the quarterly "USC College" magazine and also lead another web refresh.

Also while working for Dean Joseph Aoun, Stewart created Dornsife Technology Services and recruited its first (and still current) Director, John Parker.  Starting with a small help desk staff that was previously serving the Humanities Division, this unit was slowly evolved into a robust IT organization now serving the whole college.  It provides not only help desk support, but also application programming, technology-enhanced and distance learning, and web support.

Stewart assumed leadership of the Business Office in 2009, where he has streamlined and made more consistent the delivery of service to Dornsife deparments.  In 2010 he hired the first Human Resources Director in college history.
