Undergrad

The successful Medical, Dental, or Allied Health professions applicant is able to meet and exceed both academic and non-academic criteria pertinent to admission selection committees.  Admission boards cater to their own institutional goals and culture.  However, they consider similar attributes, skills, and experiences when considering prospective applicants.  Although the following are specific to Medical admission criteria, the basic tenets are transferable to Dental school and Allied health profession admission. To learn more, download the following article on the Successful Pre-Health Appllicant.

Major
Any major is appropriate for the Health-Professions preparation.  Pre-Health course requirements can be taken in conjunction with any major offered at USC.  It is best to choose a major on the basis of your personal preference.  Choosing a major of your choice will not only enhance the academic experience, but should enhance the prospects of learning and earning higher grades.

Minor
Minors are a great way to enhance an academic curriculum.  They typically require fewer course unit requirements than Majors yet provide insight into academic disciplines that complement a Pre-Health curriculum.

AP Credit
Premedical students intending to apply college credit earned through Advanced Placement (AP) to meet premedical requirements should be aware that some medical schools restrict the use of such credit. In most cases, the restrictions involve the official reporting of AP credit on the college transcript, establishing an upper limit of such credit toward courses required for admission, or requiring additional upper-level courses in the science areas where credit was received (AAMC, MSAR, 2008).

Transfer Credit
Pre-requisite courses taken in transfer are generally accepted by Medical & Dental schools. Limit the number of pre-requisite courses taken outside of USC to no more than 2-3 courses. When possible, take courses at 4-Year accredited institutions.

Academic Planning
Medical, Dental, and Allied-Health School admission course requirements within the United States vary.  All, however, recognize the importance of a broad education—a strong foundation in the natural sciences (biology, chemistry, and physics) and mathematics, highly developed communication skills, and a solid background in the social sciences and humanities.
