Announcements 

 

We are very pleased to announce three new faculty appointments for 2011-2012:

  • Ralph Wedgwood (ethics, metaethics, epistemology) joined us in Spring as Professor, coming from Oxford University.
  • Gabriel Uzquiano Cruz (philosophical logic, philosophy of mathematics, metaphysics, and language) joined us in Fall as Professor, coming from Oxford University.
  • Karen Lewis (philosophy of language), receivd her Ph.D. from Rutgers, and joined us in Fall 2011 as Assistant Professor.

We are also pleased to announce two new postdoctoral fellows who joined us for two years from Fall 2011:

  • Alejandro Pérez Carballo (philosophy of mathematics, metaphysics, mind & language), received his Ph.D. from MIT.
  • Sam Shpall (metaethics, practical reason), received his Ph.D. from USC.

Other School of Philosophy faculty news:

  • Mark Schroeder was promoted to Full Professor in Fall 2011; Gideon Yaffe was promoted to Full Professor in Fall 2010.
  • Stephen Finlay has been awarded a fellowship from the National Endowment of the Humanities for 2012-13 to finish his book on normative language.
  • Scott Soames will be giving the Hempel Lectures at Princeton in Spring 2013.
  • Stephen Finlay will be giving the Burman Lectures at Umeå University in Sweden in Spring 2012.
  • The Philosopher's Annual has selected a paper by Jacob Ross ("Sleeping Beauty, Countable Additivity, and Rational Dilemmas") as one of the ten best philosophy papers of 2010. This is the third consecutive year a USC philosopher has received this honor, with Mark Schroeder's papers recognized for 2008 and 2009.
  • James Higginbotham is one of four philosophers elected to the American Academy of Arts & Sciences in April 2011. He joins Scott Soames, who was elected to the Academy in 2010.
  • Scott Soames was named Distinguished Professor by the USC President in February 2011.
  • Jim Van Cleve has been awarded fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the National Humanities Center to devote 2011-12 to completing a book on Thomas Reid. He will spend at least part of the year at the National Humanities Center in North Carolina.
  • The American Philosophical Association has awarded Mark Schroeder the 2010 Article Prize for his paper "How Expressivists Can and Should Solve their Problem about Negation", as the best article published in the previous two years.
  • The American Philosophical Association has awarded Gideon Yaffe the 2011 biennial Berger Memorial Prize for his paper "Excusing Mistakes of Law", as outstanding paper in the philosophy of law.
  • Andrei Marmor is the recipient of the 2010 Phi Kappa Phi Faculty Recognition Award for his book Social Conventions (Princeton, 2009).

School of Philosophy graduate student news:

  • Alida Liberman has received a 2010-11 General Education Teaching Award.
  • Lewis Powell has been appointed as Assistant Professor at Wayne State University, beginning in 2011-12.
  • Albert Chan has been appointed as Assistant Professor at St. Ambrose University, beginning in 2011-12.
