About the Persian Program at the USC

Welcome to the Persian @ USC website. The University of Southern California has offered Persian language and culture courses in fall 2011 by generous contributions from the Farhang Foundation. At present, the elementary and intermediate Persian language courses are just taught in the fall semester. However, the newly established Middle East Studies Program is planning to offer more advanced courses in Persian language, literature and culture in the near future. The success of this program in developing new courses and initiatives is pretty much dependant upon continuous support and commitment by the Iranian community members residing in south California. The first step in achieving this goal is to encourage our Iranian heritage students to register in the Persian language classes. Our kids have the right to develop proficiency in their mother tongue and to know their cultural roots. Language is the root of thought and culture and culture is the root of civilization. This is the duty of our elite fellow Iranians in diaspora to promote and encourage learning of their native language and culture by their kids.

The Middle East Studies Program has tried to employ the latest language teaching approaches; therefore, the Persian language pedagogy at the USC is based on the latest communicative and tasked-based language teaching methodologies. The main goal of the program is to develop communicative proficiency and language skills in Persian. Based on the said approaches, the language learners are immersed in the target language from the beginning and learn the same language tasks that native-speakers of Persian use in their real life. For instance, if a native-speaker sits in a real job interview, she needs certain language skills to introduce herself and market her abilities efficiently. The Persian program has based its pedagogy on the development of language proficiency in doing real-life tasks. Our students not only learn the basic language skills such as listening, writing, reading, and speaking while they develop communicative proficiency in Persian, but also develop analytical thinking skills within a socio-cultural content.

به وبگاه فارسی دانشگاه کالیفرنیای جنوبی خوش آمدید. دانشگاه کالیفرنیای جنوبی با حمایت مالی بنیاد فرهنگ، اقدام به ارائه دروس زبان و فرهنگ فارسی در سطوح مختلف نموده است. در حال حاضر، تنها فارسی مقدماتی و متوسط در نیمسال اول تدریس می‌شود لیکن، گروه جدید مطالعات خاورمیانه، درصدد است تا دروس متنوعی در سطوح پیشرفته زبان، فرهنگ و ادبیات فارسی نیز ارائه نماید. بدیهی است، موفقیت این برنامه و گسترش دروس آن به همیاری فرهنگ‌دوستان و هم‌وطنان مقیم جنوب کالیفرنیا بستگی دارد. نخستین گام در تضمین این موفقیت، تشویق فرزندان و دانشجویان ایرانی- تبار به ثبت‌نام در کلاس‌های آموزش زبان فارسی است. این حق مسلم فرزندان ما است تا به زبان مادری خود مسلط باشند و ریشه‌های فرهنگی خود را به‌شایستگی بشناسند. زبان سازنده تفکر و شخصیت است و فرهنگ زاینده‌ی تمدن و این وظیفه‌ی ایرانیان نخبه و فرهیخته در غربت است تا در آموزش زبان مادری و فرهنگ خود به فرزندانشان کوشا باشند.

از آنجائیکه در سال‌های اخیر روش‌های آموزش زبان‌های خارجی بسیار متحول شده است، این دانشکده نیز سعی در ارائه زبان فارسی به جدیدترین روش‌ها نموده است. هم‌اکنون برنامه آموزش زبان فارسی، برپایه روش ارتباطی و کار- بنیان بنا شده است که هدف اصلی آن رشد توانش ارتباطی و مهارت‌های زبانی زبان آموزان است. بنا بر این روش، زبان‌آموزان از ابتدا در معرض زبان فارسی قرار می‌گیرند و همان مهارت‌هایی را می‌آموزند که گویشوران فارسی‌زبان در امور روزمره خود بکار می‌برند. بعنوان مثال چنانچه فارسی‌زبانی در مصاحبه شغلی شرکت کند، باید بتواند خود را بخوبی معرفی کند و توانایی‌های کاری و حرفه‌ای خود را تشریح نماید. برنامه آموزش فارسی در این دانشکده، بنای خود را بر رشد و توسعه توانایی‌های واقعی زبانی در فارسی‌آموزان قرار داده است. دانشجویان علاوه بر یادگیری مهارت‌های اصلی زبانی مانند خواندن، نوشتن، شنیدن و گفتن، مهارت‌های فکری و تحلیلی خود را نیز در قالب محتوایی فرهنگی و اجتماعی رشد می‌دهند.
