LBST 520: Tradition and the Modern World

How do the borders we encounter every day define our choices, make us feel safe, and dare us (or force us) to push past them? Shilarna Stokes explores the ways in which writers, artists, and culture-makers over three centuries of American life have worked through the challenges posed by geographical and temporal borders, as well as borders created by concepts of race, gender, religion, ethnicity, sexuality and disability.

LBST 505: East Asian Humanities: Classics of China, Korea and Japan

Professor Lori Meeks explores major themes in East Asian culture through a close examination of primary texts in translation, from early classics of the Confucian, Daoist, and Buddhist traditions,through later works of narrative, poetry, drama, and film that engage enduring themes of Confucian, Daoist, and Buddhist thought.

 

LBST 512: Language and the Globalizing World

Investigate relationships between language and geopolitical change, endangered and minority languages, and the public policy implications of multilingualism and multiculturalism.  Professor Tok Thompson will examine the role of language in a world in which English has become the global lingua franca for commerce, government, science and technology.
