Matthew Amato

History

Matthew Amato is a fifth-year PhD. candidate in the history department. Currently he is working on a dissertation titled "Exposing Humanity: Slavery, Antislavery and Early Photography in America, 1839-1865." This project assesses the place of photographic images and image-practices in the cultures of American slavery and antislavery - from the birth of photography to the end of the Civil War.

Matthew grew up in upstate New York, and graduated from Harvard University in 2006 with a B.A. in History and Literature.
