Matthew Amato is a sixth-year PhD. candidate in the history department and a Mellon/ACLS Dissertation Completion Fellow. He is completing a dissertation titled "Exposing Humanity: Slavery, Antislavery and Early Photography in America, 1839-1865." This project assesses the place of photographic images and image-practices in the cultures of American slavery and antislavery - from the birth of photography to the end of the Civil War.
